Huskies fall in Hockey East Championship
BOSTON, Mass. - The UConn men's hockey team fell in the Hockey East Championship game to Maine by a final of 5-2. Tabor Heaslip scored the lone goals for the Huskies.
The first period was a physical battle with both teams' defenses shining. Late in the first period, Maine opened the scoring as a two on one rush beat junior Tyler Muszelik for the first goal of the evening. Maine doubled their lead shortly after as they went the length of the ice beating Tyler Muszelik. The Huskies looked to find the equalizer but were unsuccessful as they entered the period break trailing by two.
The Huskies looked to claw their way back in the second period following the 2-0 deficit. UConn generated multiple scoring chances in the period, but Albin Boija of Maine kept the Huskies from finding the back of the net as they entered the period break trailing by two. Maine was able to extend their lead late in the third period as a puck was saved by Tyler Muszelik but deflected in the air to Harrison Scott who deflected it through traffic past Tyler Muszelik for Maine's third goal of the evening.
UConn was able to find the back of the net midway through the third period as Tabor Heaslip won the faceoff then was left alone in front for the goal to cut Maine's lead down to two. With 10 minutes remaining in the third period, Maine scored their fourth of the game once again extending their lead to three. Late in the third Filip Sitar found the back of the net, but it was determined that the Huskies were offsides and the goal was disallowed. UConn did not go away quietly as Tabor Heaslip scored his second of the night and the second goal of the game for the Huskies with five minutes remaining. However, the three goal lead would prove to be too much as an empty net goal sealed the win for Maine and the Huskies fell in the Hockey East championship game by a final of 5-2.
Up Next: UConn will turn their attention to the NCAA tournament and will wait to hear their name called on Selection Sunday at 3pm.
