Hang Ten: UConn Volleyball Continues Torrid Pace, Moves to 10-0
DURHAM, N.H.- UConn Volleyball went back on the road on Thursday night to face off against the University of New Hampshire in the Huskies' second true road match of the season in 2024.
Hanna Tylska got involved early first 2 points, keeping her strong play going from last weekend. Emma Werkmeister chipped in 2 early kills and another ace to pace UConn offensively. Audrey Rome, McKenna Brand, and Brenna Wyman also contributed aces of their own, part of the 5 the Huskies had as a team in the first. New Hampshire put together a 3 point run to build a slim 8-6 lead, but errors from the Wildcats got UConn back in front. New Hampshire snatched back after a successful challenge call, putting together a 5-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. UConn battled back, as Tylska and Rome helped the Huskies get back into the set with strong play on the offensive end. Taylor Pannell and Tylska kept the foot on the gas with set-ending kills as UConn took the first frame, 25-22.
UConn traded points with the host Wildcats in the second set, as the teams started off the frame tied at 5. New Hampshire went on a 4 point run to swing the lead back to the home squad, going in from 10-6 in the second frame on the back of strong defensive play up front. UConn continued to push back, turning around the set completely as Brand and Grace Maria contributed aces to put the Huskies back in front with a small 4 point cushion of 17-13. Pannell poured in back to back kills at the end of the second set to lift UConn to a two set lead, controlling the second set to take the frame 25-21
UConn did not let up in the early going of the third set, coming out firing with 3 quick points to start the set. However, New Hampshire responded with a run of their own to knot the count a 5 all. The seesaw affair continued throughout the frame, with the sides trading errors and kills with the Huskies looking to complete the sweep, locked in a 12-12 battle. The Wildcats did not go down easily, stringing together points to keep the UConn lead at 19-18. New Hampshire continued to stay poised in their comeback efforts, winning the third set 26-24.
Werkmeister, Pannell, and Tylska spearheaded the effort in the fourth set to get UConn in front 9-6. The host Wildcats battled back with 4 stragiht points to knot the score at 11. Werkmeister and Rome seized the momentum back for UConn, with two kills apiece to put the Huskies up 16-12. From there, UConn did not give up the momentum, winning the fourth set 25-19 and continuing their incredible start to the season to move to 10-0. The Huskies had twelve aces as a team, with Werkmeister leading the way with 4, part of her 18 kill-effort. Hanna Tylska continued to shine for UConn with 14 kills of her own.
Meredith Hohnbaum led New Hampshire with 11 kills.
Up Next: The Huskies will take on Brown in Durham tomorrow afternoon at 4pm. UNH will face off against Central Connecticut State before UConn takes the court at 1pm.
