Karaban Named To Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List
INDIANAPOLIS – UConn men's basketball star Alex Karaban has been named to the Midseason Watch List for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, as announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Monday (Feb. 3). Karaban is one of 50 members of the watch list who will be considered as contenders for the National Player of the Year.
The UConn captain has led the Huskies by contributing across the board this season, averaging 15.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. Karaban is one of four players nationally averaging 15p-5r-3a-1.5b line and ranks top-20 in the BIG EAST in every major category. The 6-8 forward also checks in among the national leaders in assist/turnover ratio (2.33), 3-pointers per game (2.4) and minutes per contest (37:06).
Karaban has scored 20 or more in a game five times this season and has set single game career-highs in rebounds, assists and blocked shots. He became the 53rd Husky in program history to score 1,000 points at Connecticut earlier this season, hitting the feat in his 86th career game.
The Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is to be announced at the NCAA Men's Final Four in San Antonio, from April 5-7. The formal presentation of the trophy will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. A final watch list will be released in early and those chosen will be included on the USBWA's annual awards ballot.
Karaban is one of four from the BIG EAST (Marquette's Kam Jones, St. John's' R.J. Luis, Villanova's Eric Dixon) to make the Midseason 50. The Huskies return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 when St. John's visits Gampel for a top-20 showdown.
