MACON, Ga. – The UConn softball team opened the Mercer Softball Invitational on Friday afternoon with a pair of wins. The Huskies shutout Jacksonville in game one, 7-0. UConn then beat Middle Tennessee, 6-1, behind a stellar pitching performance from Sydnee Koosh. UConn moves to 6-4 overall this season.
Game One
Graduate student Payton Kinney (Bradenton, Fla.) made her third start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney tossed 3.1 scoreless innings only giving up one hit, adding five strikeouts.
Freshman infielder Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Huskies in the bottom of the first inning. Petteys hit her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field, giving the Huskies an early 3-0 lead.
Junior Hope Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) came on in relief for Kinney in the fourth inning, making her sixth appearance of the season. Jenkins finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies, going 3.2 innings, surrendering only two hits with one strikeout, picking up her second win of the season.
Junior catcher Grace Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) extended the Huskies lead in the fourth inning, hitting her team-leading fourth double of the season, knocking in Haley Coupal (North Attleboro, Mass.) from second base.
Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) broke the game open in the fifth inning, hitting her first career home run, a three-run shot to left center, putting the Huskies in the driver's seat with a 7-0 lead.

Game Two
Redshirt-sophomore Sydnee Koosh (Canton, Ohio) earned her fourth start of the season for the Huskies in game two. Koosh was stellar, tossing her first complete game of her career, giving up only one run on two hits, adding four strikeouts. She moves to 4-3 on the season.
Middle Tennessee opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, giving the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The UConn offense responded in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs, putting the Huskies up, 3-1. Senior infielder Rosie Garcia (San Fernando, Calif.) got it started with a single to center field, scoring Lexi Hastings (Lynchburg, Va.) from third base. Hope Jenkins (Folsom, Calif.) followed Garcia with a two-run home run to center field, her second long ball of the season.
UConn added to the lead in the second inning again coming off the bat of Garcia. The senior knocked in her second run of the game, with a single, scoring Hastings, making it 4-1.
Grace Jenkins added to the Huskies lead in the fourth inning with a ground out, scoring Hastings, making it 5-1.
Petteys drove in a run in consecutive games, knocking in Grace Jenkins to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead.
Koosh closed the door on the Blue Raider hitters, retiring the last seven batters in a row.
