Huskies shut out Seton Hall in Home Opener
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team opened the weekend series with a shutout win over the Seton Hall Pirates, 7-0. Payton Kinney led the way, tossing a one hit complete game in the circle for the Huskies.
Graduate student Payton Kinney made her tenth start of the season in the circle. Kinney was sensational throughout, holding Seton Hall hitless until the seventh inning. The Florida native worked four straight one-two-three innings, retiring 14 straight batters. Kinney finished with five strikeouts, picking up her fourth win of the season.
UConn got off to a fast start, scoring runs in the first and second innings. Junior infielder Kaiea Higa opened the scoring for the Huskies in the first inning with a sac fly, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. An inning later, Hastings scored the Huskies second run with a single to right field, scoring Kaitlyn Breslin from third base to make it 2-0.
UConn extended their lead in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off the bat of sophomore Kaitlyn Breslin. The Massachusetts native doubled to left center, scoring Rosie Garcia and Hope Jenkins, giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies continued to tack on runs, scoring three more in the sixth inning. Senior infielder Rosie Garcia delivered a two-run double to left center, scoring Grace Jenkins and Higa. Junior Hope Jenkins drove in her 15th run of the season with a single to right field, scoring Garcia from second base, making it 7-0.
Kinney's no hit bid was broken up to leadoff the seventh inning, but the veteran buckled down to keep Seton Hall scoreless.
