Huskies Fall to #7 Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In their third ranked matchup of the season, the UConn women's field hockey team fell to no.7 Harvard 3-2 Sunday afternoon. Freshman Juul Sauer was the lone goal scorer for the Huskies.
Harvard jumped out on the attack in the first quarter immediately from the first whistle. The Crimson led in every category, outshooting the Huskies 6-1 in shots and 4-0 in shots on goal. Despite the pressure UConn's defense remained strong throughout the quarter. Late in the first quarter Harvard found the back of the net on their third consecutive penalty corner and would head into the locker room with the lead.
UConn eventually found the equalizer in the second quarter when a long pass from outside the circle found its way to the stick of freshman Juul Sauer who fired it home for the goal to tie the game at one. Harvard would respond once gain on a penalty corner to take the 2-1 lead. The Huskies looked to tie the game again but the Crimson defense would shut them down the rest of the quarter and enter the half with the one goal lead.
Penalty corners once again hurt the Huskies in the third quarter as Harvard was able to extend their lead to two following their sixth penalty corner of the afternoon. UConn was unable to register a shot in the third quarter and entered the final from trailing by two.
The Huskies continued to fight in the fourth quarter, as freshman Juul Sauer took the ball coast to coast and fired the shot past the Harvard goalkeeper to cut the Crimson lead to one.
Up next: UConn will return home as they will welcome Temple and Yale to Storrs. Huskies will face Temple at 1pm on Friday Sept. 20 and Yale Sunday Sept.22.
