Huskies Close Regular Season on the Road at Georgetown
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's lacrosse team hits the road for the regular season finale Saturday afternoon, taking on the Georgetown Hoyas in a BIG EAST match-up live on FS2.
The Huskies and Hoyas head into the final weekend tied for second place in the BIG EAST standings, both at 4-1. Saturday's match-up will be a preview of next weekend's first round of the conference tournament as the both teams have clinched post season spots with the No. 2 going to the winner and the No. 3 seed to the loser. A win for the Huskies on Saturday combined with a Denver loss against Xavier would give UConn a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. The Pioneers head into the weekend finale at 5-0.
UConn comes in off a 21-11 win over Butler on Senior Day last week to make it four-straight conference wins. The Huskies have won five of their last six as well.
Senior attacker Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) was tabbed the BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on Monday after piling up 14 points over two games. Shaffer had five goals and passed out six assists in the win over Butler. Her 11 total points in the match up were the most by any BIG EAST player in a game all season, while her six assists were also a single-game best for the conference this year. She also added four draw controls and two ground balls for the week.
Shaffer has 39 goals and 20 assists on the season and leads a Husky offense the paces the conference in scoring at 13.93 goals per game.
In last season's match-up with Georgetown, the Huskies posted a 13-9 win at home and have won four of the last five match-ups with the Hoyas. Georgetown comes in to the finale off a non-conference win over Monmouth, their fourth-straight win.
Following Saturday's game the Huskies will move on to the BIG EAST Tournament next weekend scheduled for May 2 and 4 at Xavier's Corcoran Field.
