Huskies Fall to Northeastern in Overtime
STORRS, Conn. – The No. 15 ranked UConn women's hockey team fell to the No. 14 ranked Northeastern Huskies, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
Senior Goaltender Tia Chan made her 17th start of the season as UConn's netminder. Chan made 26 saves in the contest.
The game was scoreless through the first 20 minutes as UConn led in shots 8-4 in the first period.
Northeastern opened the scoring seven minutes into the second period off a deflection in front of goal from Skylar Irving, her 11th goal of the season.
UConn responded with an equalizer from senior forward Jada Habisch with three minutes remaining in the second period. Habisch now has eight goals this season and has scored in consecutive games for the 12thtime in her career.
The game remained knotted up at one heading into the second intermission. Northeastern led in shots in the second period, 14-4.
The game opened up in the third period as both teams lit the lamp four times in the period.
UConn took their first lead of the game on the power play with 14 minutes remaining in the third period. Senior defender Ava Rinker scored her first goal of the season, putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.
Northeastern quickly responded with an equalizer just two minutes later off the stick of Lily Shannon, her 11th of the season, evening the game at two.
Northeastern regained the lead with ten minutes to go in regulation, as Jaden Bodgen scored her sixth goal of the season, making it 3-2.
After a five minute major was assessed to Northeastern, UConn found themselves with another power play opportunity. Habisch capitalized for the Huskies, tallying her second goal of the game and once again knotting the game up, 3-3. This is the 10th multi-goal game for Habisch in her career.
The game remained deadlocked at three, sending the game to overtime. UConn was assessed a five minute major penalty before the end of regulation, putting the Huskies shorthanded in the five minute overtime period.
Northeastern found a game winner one minute into overtime off the stick of Tuva Kandell, her third of the season.
