WSOC Notch 3-0 Road Victory at Marquette
MILWAUKEE – The UConn women's soccer team (8-3-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) notched a 3-0 victory at Marquette on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Senior Abbey Jones notched a brace in the win while graduate student Lucy Cappadona tallied the other goal for the Huskies.
Graduate student Kaitlyn Mahoney returned to the starting lineup in goal on Sunday and made an impact with four saves and a couple good plays on Marquette set pieces.
The Nottingham, England native put the Huskies in front in the 16th minute. Junior Lina Dantes chased down a long ball along the end line, maneuvered past a Marquette defender and served a ball inside the box to junior Chioma Okafor.
Okafor served a good ball towards the far post that landed at the feet of Jones and she powered home her second goal of the season.
Nearly 10 minutes later at the 26:01 mark of the first half, the Huskies capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Senior Sophie McCarthy registered her third assist of the year on her corner kick service that found Cappadona for her second goal of the year.
The Huskies continued to apply pressure with a two-goal lead in the second half. UConn had a couple quality chances from Okafor and Anna Carson before Jones made it 3-0 Huskies in the 64th minute.
Maddie Fried played a ball back to senior Kelly Monaco and the outside back lobbed a pass into the box that Jones flicked home to give the Huskies more breathing room.
UConn notched its sixth shutout of the year and their third on the road this season.
Next up, the Huskies head home to face Butler on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m. at Morrone Stadium.
