Casey Handrahan Honored with Assistant Women's Coaches Award by the AHCA

STORRS, Conn. – Casey Handrahan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association on Friday afternoon, as he was awarded the Assistant Women's Coach Award. This award honors an assistant coach's career body of work.

Handrahan is in his twelfth season at UConn, since joining Head Coach Chris MacKenzie's staff in June of 2013. Since arriving in Storrs, Handrahan has played an instrumental role in the Huskies steady climb to national prominence. The Huskies have earned rankings in the USCHO National Poll for 31 straight weeks, dating back to the 2023-24 season. Last season was UConn's best in the program's history, recording a record 25 wins as they captured the Hockey East regular season and tournament crowns for the very first time, earning the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. UConn led the country in scoring defense (1.24) a season ago thanks in large part to Handrahan's efforts.

Handrahan was named the Associate Head Coach in 2021, and primarily oversees the Huskies goaltenders, defense, and power play. Off the ice, he manages recruiting, and video analysis. In Handrahan's tenure, he has coached nine student-athletes to Hockey East All-Star selections, which includes three goaltenders in Elaine Chuli (2015-16), Annie Belanger (2017-18), and Tia Chan (2023-24). Handrahan has also coached six Huskies to Hockey East All-Rookie selections and three players to Hockey East Best Defensive Forwards Awards. Under his guidance, UConn has sent over 25 student-athletes on to play professional hockey around the world.

"I am privileged to be receiving The Assistant Women's Coach Award," said Handrahan. "When considering the former recipients, I am extremely flattered to be in their company. There are many worthy coaches in women's hockey who I hold in high regard, so this means a lot to be chosen."

"I would like to acknowledge UConn Athletics, Coach MacKenzie, Coach Wulf, and the rest of the UConn hockey staff for supporting me to work in this great game." Handrahan continued.

Handrahan went on to say, "I would also like to recognize the players, past and present, for their trust, commitment and belief in the UConn hockey program.  This wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for them."

"Lastly, I would like to thank my family. Without their unwavering support, patience, and sacrifice, I wouldn't be able to be in this game for so long. I am forever grateful." Handrahan concluded.

Prior to his time at UConn, Handrahan served as the Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Neumann University for three years. In his three seasons coaching the Knights, he coached two student-athletes to All-ECAC honors, and 25 players to All-Academic selections.

"This is a much deserved recognition for Casey who has served our program so well the past 12 seasons," said Head Coach Chris MacKenzie. "His knowledge and passion for coaching impacts our student-athletes and staff every day."
