HUSKIES OUT TO DEFEND SURF CLUB TITLE

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's golf team returns to action this week playing in the Surf Club Invitational in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Huskies are the defending champions at the event, taking home last season's trophy after a dominating 14-stroke win over the field.

This year's event will get underway on Monday, March 10 with 36-holes on the par 71 The Surf Golf and Beach Club course. The final 18-holes will take place on Tuesday, March 11. Both days will be a 9:15 am shotgun start.

UConn is part of an 18-team field that also features host App State and Middle Tennessee, Radford, Delaware, Georgia State, Purdue Fort Wayne, Gonzaga, Northern Kentucky, Queens, Holy Cross, West Georgia, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central, Bucknell, Longwood, North Carolina A&T, Iona and Coastal Carolina (IND).

The Huskies came out on top last season after shooting a team score of 825 (-27), 14 strokes ahead of Radford in second.  UConn had four golfers in the top ten including current Huskies in senior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, MA) and sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, FL).

UConn heads into this week's tournament coming off a fourth-place finish at the 16-team Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico where they were led by Heard.  The sophomore turned in the best performance of the season and of his career as well as his highest finish.  Heard was 9-under for the tournament to tie for second place, recording his first career top five finish on the leaderboard. 

On the season, Heard has played seven of his 11 rounds under par and owns a 71.8 per round average. Dennehy and junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, CT) also own below 72.0 averages this season.  Goode is the team leader at 71.6 and has nine rounds under par while Dennehy is at 71.7 with seven rounds under par.  The duo also own a pair of top-10 finishes each.

The UConn lineup at this week's event will be rounded out by sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, CT), freshman Matt Costello (Taunton, MA) and senior Eric Boulger (Walpole, MA).

After wrapping play at the Surf Club, the Huskies will be right back in action with an appearance in the ECU Intercollegiate at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, NC on March 17-18.
