Huskies Dominate Cornell, Improve to 3-0
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's field hockey team put on a show Friday afternoon as they defeated Cornell 6-1 for their third win of the season. Four different Huskies found the back of the net, while Juul Sauer continued to stay hot with two goals.
UConn got out to a fast start as they received a penalty stroke just one minute into the start of the game. The Huskies turned to junior Julia Bressler who converted the penalty stroke with ease for the Huskies first goal of the day. Later in the first quarter the Huskies doubled their lead as freshman Juul Sauer took the feed from Juana Garcia and was able to find the back of the net despite traffic in front. Cornell responded fast as they were able to cut into the Huskies lead with a goal of their own just one minute later. The Huskies defense would step up and prevent another Big Red goal and enter the quarter break with the 2-1 lead.
The second quarter was a defensive battle. The Huskies eventually broke through with one minute remaining in the quarter as freshman Juul Sauer would net her second of the game to give UConn the two-goal lead heading into the half.
The Huskies offense shined in the second half as they scored three goals. The offensive firepower began with senior Madi Herb in the third quarter as she took the feed from Sol Simone in front and pushed it home. UConn's defense and sophomore goaltender Natalie McKenna stood strong preventing the Big Red from cutting into the Huskies lead.
In the fourth quarter, UConn extended their lead to four as senior Sophia Ugo scored her fourth goal in three games. The final goal of the afternoon came off a penalty corner as freshman Isabel Soeters found fellow freshman Sophie Perschk who would find freshman Milaw Clause for the goal. The Huskies would lock down Cornell and come away with the 6-1 victory.
