Huskies with Strong Performance at West Point Invite
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team put up strong performances throughout the three-day invitational hosted by Army West Point. The tournament featured five singles flights and two doubles flights in a 17-team field.
Four Huskies reached the quarterfinals in their flighted main draws in singles and two doubles teams reached the finals in their flighted main draws in doubles. Overall, UConn went 14-9 in singles and 12-3 in doubles.
"The Army Invite is always a very good tournament, with some top teams from the East region," Head Coach Glenn Marshall said. "It is an Invitational tournament, with flighted draws for singles and doubles. Our team continued their solid play with an overall record of 26-12."
Highlighting the weekend were Olivia Wright and Victoria Matos as they teamed up to win the Flight A doubles finals main draw by a score of 6-4 over New Jersey Institute of Technology. Also, Maria Constantinou and doubles partner, Caroline Hinshaw reached the finals in the Flight B main draw but fell short 6-3 against Quinnipiac's Anagha Shankar and Vera Sekerina.
Junior Isabel Petri Bere highlighted the weekend in singles winning four matches in the Flight D main draw and reaching the finals against Rider's Laila Fishman. Petri Bere fell short in three sets by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 8-10.
Additionally, on the singles side, sophomore Cameron Didion and senior Aleksandra Karamyshev worked hard to reach the quarterfinals in the Flight B main draw. Didion bested Fordham's Lorraine Bergmann in a three-set match in the round of 16, going 6-1, 5-7, 10-4, but fell in the quarterfinals to Fordham's Anlin Xie by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Karamyshev also put up a fight, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Fordham's Demetria Jhaveri in the round of 16, but would fall short in the quarterfinals match losing the second set tiebreaker, and dropping a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) decision.
In the Flight C singles main draw, freshman Caroline Hinshaw also reached the quarterfinals as Hinshaw took a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory in the round of 16. However, Hinshaw would fall to Army West Point's Madison Smith in the quarterfinals by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
"Olivia and Victoria captured the A Doubles Championship, with solid wins over the #1 and #4 seeded teams from Army and Cornell," Marshall commented. "Maria and Caroline were Runners-up in the B Doubles, with a 4-1 overall record. Isabel was our top performer in singles, with a Runner-up in the main draw finals of her singles flight going 4-1. I was very pleased with our entire team's effort and results this weekend. It was a very good tournament against some very strong teams, and we really had some outstanding results."
The Huskies will next head to ITA Regionals as a smaller group of players will be sent to compete on Oct. 5-8 hosted by Harvard in Cambridge, Mass.
