HookC Wins Pitcher's Duel at UNCG
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UConn baseball team (8-11) notched a 3-1 victory at UNC Greensboro on Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Oliver Pudvar pitched a gem for the Huskies with a career-high 7.0 innings of work and became the first UConn pitcher this year to record double digit strikeouts with 10.
The Shelburne, Vt. native allowed a lead off home run to Luke Holland and then didn't allow another run for the remainder of the night.
UConn tied the game in the third with Anthony Belisario nearly hitting a home run to right center that banged off the fence and resulted in a double. The freshman scored on an RBI single from Beau Root to even the game at one.
The Huskies took the lead in the fourth courtesy the legs of center fielder Caleb Shpur. Shpur reached on a bunt single, stole second base and then scored on a Bryan Padilla infield single that got by the first baseman. Even if the ball was caught cleanly at first, Shpur was halfway to home on the throw.
Tyler Minick provided insurance in the eighth inning with an RBI single that plated Root to make it 3-1.
Greg Shaw III came out of the pen in the eighth and recorded a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 frame. UConn closer Brady Afthim followed suit with a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his third save of the year.
The Huskies and Spartans resume the series on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
