No. 8 UConn to Host No. 20 Maryland Thursday
STORRS, Conn. – The eighth-ranked UConn women's basketball team (1-1) faces No. 20 Maryland (1-1) on Thursday in Gampel Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. The game will air on FS1 and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (97-9 ESPN).
Thursday is Jersey Night in Gampel! Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite UConn jerseys or shirseys. On Thursday, fans can show their ticket to the Maryland game at the UConn Bookstore to receive a 15 percent discount on all items with the purchase of any basketball jersey at full price (restrictions may apply).
Redshirt junior Paige Bueckers scored 27 points as the Huskies fell at NC State, 92-81, last Sunday. The Huskies led by nine after the first quarter and by two at halftime but were outscored 50-38 in the second half. Senior Aaliyah Edwards had 21 points and six rebounds while freshman Qadence Samuels added a season-high 14 points.
Samuels was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Monday. In her first two games as a Husky, Samuels averaged 12.5 points while shooting 56.3 percent and 53.8 percent from three-point range. Samuels started her collegiate career with 11 points vs. Dayton. She notched 14 points at NC State.
UConn is 7-1 all-time vs. Maryland. The Terps got their first win in the series last season, 85-78. UConn was without starters Azzi Fudd, Dorka Juhasz, Paige Bueckers and Nika Muhl in the game and the Huskies had just seven players available. Aaliyah Edwards led the game with 25 points. This will be the Terps' first game in Storrs and Gampel Pavilion.
Maryland fell to then-No. 6 South Carolina, 114-76, last Sunday. Shyanne Sellers leads the Terps with 23 points per game. Lavender Briggs has the team lead with 6.5 rebounds per game. Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 22nd season at Maryland.
