Track & Field Hosts Northeast Challenge This Weekend
STORRS- UConn track & field returns home this weekend to host the annual UConn Northeast Challenge this weekend, starting on Friday, April 18th and concluding on Saturday, April 19th.
In last year's Northeast Challenge, both Husky teams came out on top. The men's side claimed first, posting 129 points, with the women's team rattling off 161.5 points. Kasey Savage claimed the top spot in the long jump at 7.44m and Josh Mooney won the decathlon with 7,026 points. On the women's side, Anna Connors took the top spot in the 200m. A'liyah Thomas won the 100 meter hurdles and long jump, and Jessica Starr claimed first place the 400 meter hurdles.
Mooney took home BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks, after finishing 5th in the javelin throw at the Crimson Tide Invitational with a throw of 68.01m. Faith Kiplimo collected BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week after her standout performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Kiplimo ran the second-fastest time in program history last Saturday in Tuscaloosa, taking second place in the meet with a time of 10:07.45. Kiplimo currently sits at the top spot in the BIG EAST, and 14th in the country in the steeplechase.
The meet will kick off on Friday with the multi-events (heptathlon and decathlon) starting at 12:00pm and 12:30pm, respectively and the men's pole vault kicking off the field events at 12:00pm. The following teams will be competing in the meet:
