No. 11 Huskies Host Providence Sunday, WEAR BLUE
STORRS – The No. 11 UConn men's basketball team (11-3, 3-0 BIG EAST) rides a seven-game winning streak into Gampel Pavilion for its first on-campus game in over a month on Sunday when regional rival Providence (7-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) visits. Tip-off for the matinee is set for 2 p.m. on NBC with Noah Eagle, Donny Marshall and Britney Eurton on the call.
The contest airing on NBC broadcast is UConn's third recorded game all-time on the National Broadcast Company, with prior appearances in 1996 and 1981. The contest is UConn's Bleed Blue, Wear Blue game and all fans are encouraged to wear their Husky blue to Gampel. The Huskies have won their last 27 home games and are 30-1 in their last 31 on campus in Storrs.
UConn is meeting Providence for the 81st time in the history of the New England neighbors. Connecticut leads the series 49-31 dating back to the first meeting in 1928 and swept the regular season series last year. UConn has won four-straight against the Friars and the last six meetings inside Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies were most recently in action on New Year's Day at DePaul, racing out to a double-digit halftime lead in an 81-68 victory over a much-improved Blue Demon side. Solo Ball hit seven 3-pointers en route to a career-high 22 points, while Alex Karaban added 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. The Huskies as a team knocked down 14 from 3-point range and held a DePaul team that came in among the national leaders beyond the arc to a 3-for-12 effort.
Karaban leads the Huskies this season with 16.7 points per game, adding 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. He is also shooting a career-best 42.9 percent from 3-point range. Ball adds 13.2 points per game and is connecting on a 44.7 percent clip from downtown, while Tarris Reed Jr. posts 10.9 points and a team-high 8.1 rebounds a night. Hassan Diarra leads the squad and is third in the BIG EAST with 6.4 assists per game, while Samson Johnson has started 13 contests and is scoring 7.5 points per game on 82.7 percent shooting. UConn is expected to be without Liam McNeeley (13.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) on Sunday after an ankle injury at DePaul.
Providence sits at 7-7 on the season and is off to a 1-2 start in BIG EAST play. Bryce Hopkins leads PC with 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game but has been limited to three contests. Jayden Pierre adds 12.6 points per game, and Bensley Joseph posts 11.3 a night. Providence boasts a top-80 defensive per Kenpom and is among the national leaders in field goal percentage defense.
Following the game on Sunday the Huskies continue a stretch of four-on-five on the road with a trip to Villanova on Jan. 8.
