Huskies Shutout Creighton Securing Series Win
OMAHA, Neb. – The UConn softball team defeated the Creighton Bluejays, 8-0 in a five inning run rule on Saturday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. UConn moves to 7-2 in BIG EAST play and 18-12 overall this season.
Game Three
Graduate student Payton Kinney earned her 13th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney was dominant, tossing her second complete game shutout this season, only giving up four hits and a pair of walks, adding one strikeout.
UConn once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Huskies loaded the bases for freshman infielder Cat Petteys who hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. One batter later, junior infielder Savannah Ring worked a bases loaded walk, forcing in Kaitlyn Breslin from third base.
UConn extended their lead in the second inning, scoring three runs to make it 5-0. Junior infielder Kaiea Higa delivered a two-run triple, the first three bagger of her career. The next batter, Kaitlyn Breslin drove in Higa with a sac fly to center field. Breslin now has 15 runs batted in her last four games.
UConn put the game out of reach for Creighton in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs, giving the Huskies an 8-0 cushion. Higa added a two-run homer to her already impressive day at the plate, her second long ball of the season, giving her a career high four runs batted in. Later in the inning, Ring drove in her second run of the game with a single to left field, scoring Breslin from third base. Ring now has three multi-RBI games in her last four starts.
Kinney did well to keep the potent Bluejay lineup at bay, stranding runners on base in four out of the five innings.
