Huskies sweep doubleheader at DePaul, Clinch the Series

CHICAGO, Ill. – The UConn softball team swept their doubleheader at DePaul on Friday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium. UConn dominated in game one, beating the Blue Demons, 16-1 in a five inning run rule. The Huskies continued their dominance at the plate in game two, securing the series win over DePaul, 14-5. 

Game One

Graduate student Payton Kinney started in game one, making her 17th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney went 4.0 innings giving up one run on just one hit with three strikeouts, picking up her eighth win of the season. 

UConn jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The first five UConn batters drew walks to kick start the Huskies offense. Freshman infielder Cat Petteys worked an eight pitch bases loaded walk, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin followed Petteys with a single to left field, scoring Grace Jenkins and Rosie Garcia

Garcia extended the Huskies lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Hastings and Grace Jenkins

DePaul scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run, making it 5-1.

UConn's offense exploded for seven runs on five hits in the third inning, with six runs coming with two outs. Hastings got the big inning started with a sac fly to left field, scoring Hope Jenkins from third base. A batter later, Garcia came to the plate with the bases loaded once again. The senior hit a mile high pop up in the infield that was mishandled by the DePaul defense, allowing two more runs to score and keeping the inning alive. Petteys followed Garcia with a single to left field, scoring Grace Jenkins from third base. Breslin capped off the Huskies big inning with a three-run home run, her 14th of the season, giving UConn a commanding 12-1 lead. 

UConn's offense continued to keep their foot on the gas, scoring two more runs in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 14-1. Grace Jenkins knocked in Kaitlyn Kibling with a single to left field, giving Jenkinsribbies in ten of her last eleven games. Garcia followed Jenkins with a single to right field, scoring Hastings from third base, giving Garcia three RBI in the game. 

Sophomore infielder Caylee De Meo added two more runs to the Huskies lead in the fifth inning with a pinch hit two-run home run, her second of the season, giving UConn a 16-1 lead. 

Freshman Amber Bretton came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning, making her 14th appearance of the season, closing out the win in the circle for the Huskies. 

News and Notes

  • Kaitlyn Breslin drove in five RBI, two shy of her career high. This is Breslin's sixth game with three plus RBI in a game. She records her 14th multi-hit and 12th multi-Rbi games this season and pushes her hitting streak to seven straight games. 
  • Lexi Hastings extended her hitting streak to ten straight games, recording her 17th multi-hit game this season. She stole a game high three bases for this season. 
  • Rosie Garcia tied a season game high with three RBI in the game. Garcia records her 13th multi-hit and 8th multi-RBI games this season. 
  • Grace Jenks extended her hitting streak to ten straight games, recording her 15th multi-hit game this season. 
  • Cat Petteys drove in her ninth RBI in her last four games. 
  • Caylee De Meo hit her second home run of the season. 
  • UConn loaded the bases in the first and third innings. 
  • UConn picks up their fifth run-rule victory this season. 

Game Two

Junior Hope Jenkins made her 9th start of the season in game two for the Huskies. Jenkins went 5.0 innings giving up two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. The California native picked up her 10th win of the season, which leads the Huskies pitching staff. 

Cat Petteys opened the scoring in the third inning, hitting her ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left center, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead. 

UConn added to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs on three hits. Rosie Garcia continued her hot hitting from game one, delivering a two-out double to right center, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling and Grace JenkinsPetteys once again came up big at the dish for the Huskies, delivering another two-out knock, as the freshman singled to center field, scoring Garcia from second base. 

DePaul trimmed into the Huskies lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs to make it 6-2. 

UConn's offense manufactured two runs in the sixth inning, giving the Huskies a six run lead once again, 8-2. Kaitlyn Breslin drove in her sixth RBI on the day with a single down the right field line, scoring Grace Jenkins from second base. Hope Jenkins followed Breslin with a single to left field, scoring Petteys from third base.

Payton Kinney came on in relief for Jenkins in the sixth inning. Kinney tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, adding a strikeout. 

The Huskies offense put the game out of reach for DePaul in the top of the seventh inning as UConn put up a crooked number, hanging a six spot on the board. Petteys got the inning started, driving in her fifth RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk, forcing Heidi Barber to score from third base. Breslin followed Petteys with another walk, forcing Hastings to score from third base. Hope Jenkins notched her third hit of the game with a single to center field, scoring her twin sister Grace Jenkins from third base. Haley Coupal kept the inning going, reaching on a fielder's choice, allowing Petteys and Breslin to score on a DePaul error. Caylee De Meo capped off the Huskies big inning with a single to center field, scoring Hope Jenkins from third base. 

Amber Bretton came on in relief for Kinney in the seventh inning, making her 15th appearance of the season for the Huskies, locking down the win.

  • Grace Jenkins broke the program record for career doubles, hitting the 51st in her career. 
  • Grace Jenkins broke the program single season doubles record, hitting her 19th this season.
  • Hope Jenkins recorded her 200th career strikeout. 
  • Cat Petteys drove in five RBI, one shy of her career high, recording her sixth multi-RBI game this season. 
  • Hope Jenkins recorded her first three-hit game this season. She now has seven multi-hit and five multi-RBI games this season. 
  • Grace Jenkins recorded her second three-hit game this season, giving her 16 multi-hit games in 2025. She came around to score a run in each of her plate appearances. Jenkins has now reached base safely in 19 straight games. 
  • Rosie Garcia had back to back multi-RBI games giving her nine this season. 
  • Kaitlyn Breslin recorded back to back multi-RBI games, giving her 13 this season. 
  • Caylee De Meo recorded RBI in back to back games for the first time this season. 
  • UConn worked a season high ten walks. 
  • Lexi Hastings had her ten game hit streak snapped.
