Sarah Strong Named BIG EAST Player, Freshman of the Week
STORRS, Conn. – After leading the Huskies to two wins, UConn women's basketball forward Sarah Strong was selected as the BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league Monday.
Strong averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals last week. She shot 77.3 percent from the field and 70 percent from three-point range.
In an 88-52 win over Holy Cross, Strong set a new personal best with 22 points on 9-12 shooting and went 4-5 for three. She added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
In an 85-52 win over then-No. 22 Louisville, the Durham, N.C., native notched 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists. She shot 8-10 from the field, including 3-5 from beyond the arc.
Strong leads the Huskies in rebounds, steals and blocks and is second in scoring.
This is the fourth time this season Strong has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and her first Player of the Week nod.
The second-ranked Huskies (8-0) travel to No. 8 Notre Dame (7-2) this Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
