Huskies Kick Off BIG EAST Play at Villanova This Weekend
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team will open their BIG EAST slate this weekend at the Villanova Wildcats for a three-game series from March 7-9. The series will begin on Friday, March 7 at 3:00pm. All games will be streamed on FloSports.
UConn (11-7) comes into conference play four games above .500 this season. The Huskies offense has had a strong start to the season as UConn leads the conference in home runs (19), runs batted in (93), and runs scored (99). UConn is also second in hits (143), slugging percentage (.449), and total plate appearances (576). The Huskies have five players hitting over .300 in freshman Cat Petteys, senior Rosie Garcia (.390), junior Kaiea Higa (.357), senior Lexi Hastings (.354), and junior Grace Jenkins (.352). Jenkins leads the BIG EAST with five home runs this season.
UConn's pitching staff has been led this season by graduate student Payton Kinney. In nine appearances this season, Kinney possesses a 0.51 era in 27.2 innings pitched, posting 21 strikeouts, and holding opposing hitters to a .161 batting average. The Huskies pitching staff ranks second in the BIG EAST in strikeouts (83), and fifth in era (4.41).
Scouting Villanova (7-11)
The defending BIG EAST champs Villanova Wildcats are off to a 7-11 start in the 2025 season. The Wildcats are coached by Bridget Orchard in her seventh season. Villanova has been led this season by senior infielder Ava Franz who leads the Wildcats in batting average (.340), hits (18), triples (2), and runs scored (10). The last time these two programs met was in last year's BIG EAST Semifinal as the Wildcats defeated the Huskies, 4-1 in route to their third BIG EAST title in the last four years. UConn leads the all-time series 49-18.
