WESTWOOD, CA - The UConn baseball team (1-7) lost to UCLA, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Huskies scored first, with their first run in the first inning this season, on a Tyler Minick solo homer. It was the fourth home run of the year for Minick. The sophomore third baseman posted a three-hit game including an RBI single that made it 8-6 in the seventh inning.
UConn starter Ian Cooke logged the longest outing for a UConn starting pitcher with 4.2 innings pitched on Saturday.
Gabe Van Emon pitched 1.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run while Jude Abbadessa tossed a scoreless inning of work. LHP JT Caruso made his UConn debut on Saturday with 0.2 innings pitched that featured his first strikeout of the season.
Rob Rispoli had a multi-hit effort including a two-run home run, his first career homer, in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. However, UCLA plated five runs in the fifth inning with two outs with the help of some misplays in the field for the Huskies.
Grant MacArthur also recorded a multi-hit effort in the loss.
UConn closes the Southern California Classic on Sunday, March 2 at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PST with a contest against No. 14 Vanderbilt at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
