Huskies Will Head into Final Round With the Lead
HAMPDEN, Mass. - The UConn men's golf team wrapped up the second round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse on Monday and will take a three-stroke lead into the final 18-holes on Tuesday looking to lay claim to their fifth team title at their annual tournament. The Huskies posted a team score of 291 on Monday and after two rounds sit at 578 (+3).
The Huskies are in front of Rhode Island in second place who have a two-day score of 581. Villanova is right there in third place (582) with Boston College in fourth (584) and Fairfield in fifth (590). The Stags have the top spot on the player leaderboard with Colin Summers holding a one stroke lead at -5 (69-70=139) over Villanova's Matthew Zerfass and Tyler Bruneau, both at -4.
The UConn contingent is led by junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) who move up the leaderboard and is in fourth place at -3. Goode shot 70 on Sunday and 71 on Monday as he looks to make a move on Tuesday in his quest to defend his title at the event. Senior teammate Ray Dennehy (Princeton, Mass.) is in a tie for fifth place at -2 (68-74=142).
Sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, Conn.) took five strokes off his Sunday score, carding a 72 on Monday to sit tied for 28th with a 149 (77-72). Freshman Matt Costello (Taunton, Mass.) also improved off his Sunday round, shooting a 74 on Monday to sit at 149 (75-74) as well.
Sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, Fla.) rounds out UConn's lineup and is tied for 37th with a two-round score of 150 (74-76).
UConn's Eric Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) and senior Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.), playing as individuals, sit tied for 22nd on the leaderboard, both coming in at 148 over two rounds. Senior Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) is tied for 28th with a 149 (72-77).
The final round will get underway at GreatHorse on Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.
