Lacrosse Set for BIG EAST Semifinal vs. No. 2 Seed Villanova
STORRS, Conn.- UConn women's lacrosse (11-5, 4-2 BIG EAST) hits the road to kick off postseason play, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Villanova University in the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament Semifinal. The Huskies come into the tournament as the #3 seed and will face off against the #2 seed host Wildcats.
In a must-win regular season finale in Storrs last Saturday, UConn took care of business against Georgetown, defeating the Hoyas 15-9 on senior day to officially clinch a spot in the conference tournament. The Huskies were anchored by a strong defensive effort that saw Georgetown score just nine goals. UConn was led by reigning Defensive Player of the Week Abby Beran (Wading River, N.Y.), who caused four Hoya turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Tori Cini (Syosset, N.Y.) notched double-digit saves for the third time this season, turning away Georgetown 11 times to hold it down for UConn in net.
On the attack, Ava Plata (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tied her career-high with six points (two goals, four assists), Emma Dacey (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied five points (two goals, three assists), with Jenna Giardina (South Salem N.Y.) and Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) rounding out the balanced scoring effort. Giardina and Davis each tallied four points in the UConn victory that saw the Huskies explode for seven unanswered goals in the second half to extend their lead to 12-3.
UConn takes on Villanova for the second time this season. The Wildcats secured the #2 seed in the conference tournament for the first time in program history, going 4-2 in conference play. In the first matchup between the teams, the Huskies were stifled by a lockdown defensive effort from the Wildcats, falling 11-7 on March 22nd in their conference opener. This is the first conference tournament matchup between the two teams. UConn leads the all-time series 11-4.
The winner of this semifinal will take on the winner of Georgetown/Denver in the championship game on Saturday at 6:00pm.
