Huskies fall to Boston College

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team had their nine game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night, as the Huskies fell to Boston College, 10-5 at Burrill Family Field. UConn moves to 31-15 overall this season with three games remaining in the regular season. 

Junior Hope Jenkins made her 11th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Jenkins went 4.0 innings giving up four earned runs on four hits, adding a pair of strikeouts. 

UConn jumped out to an early lead in the first inning off the bat of junior catcher Grace Jenkins as she hit her 17th home run of the season, a solo shot to right center field, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. 

Boston College took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a two-run single. 

UConn reclaimed the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs to make it 3-2. Senior outfielder Lexi Hastings came around to score on a throwing error by the Eagles, tying the game at 2-2. Freshman infielder Cat Petteys gave the Huskies the lead with a single down the left field line, scoring Kaiea Higa from third base. 

Boston College tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning off a solo home run. 

Boston College took the lead for good in the fifth inning, as the Eagles scored five runs, putting UConn at an 8-3 deficit. 

Graduate student Payton Kinney came on in relief for Jenkins in the middle of the fifth inning, making her 28th appearance of the season for the Huskies. Kinney finished out the game in the circle, going 3.0 innings giving up four runs on five hits. 

The Huskies responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of solo home runs, trimming into the Eagles lead, 8-5. Grace Jenkins continued her power surge at the plate, leading off the inning with her second home run of the game, a solo shot to center field, her 18th of the season. Later in the inning, sophomore outfielder Kaityln Breslin got a hold of one, a solo shot to left field, her 16th of the year. 

Boston College put the game out of reach for the Huskies in the top of the seventh inning, added two insurance runs with a two-run home run, giving the Eagles a 10-5 lead.

  • Three Huskies registered three-hit games. 
  • Grace Jenkins recorded her second multi-home run game this season and third of her career. Jenkins now has 17 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI games this season. She is now up to 63 RBI this season and has reached base safely in 24 straight games. 
  • Rosie Garcia recorded her third three-hit game this season and 15th multi-hit game. Garcia has reached base safely in 11 straight games. 
  • Cat Petteys recorded her sixth three-hit game this season and her 16th multi-hit game in her freshman campaign. 
  • Hope Jenkins recorded her 100th career hit in the fourth inning. 
  • Kaitlyn Breslin hit her 16th home run of the season, giving her 51 RBI in her sophomore campaign. Breslin has reached base safely in 13 straight games. 
  • Lexi Hastings extends her reached base safely streak to 19 straight games.
