Lacrosse Hosts Drexel for Season Opener
STORRS, Conn.- UConn lacrosse begins their 2025 spring campaign at home in Storrs on Saturday afternoon, welcoming in the #24 ranked Drexel Dragons.
The Huskies finished the 2024 season with a record of 11-7, 5-1 in BIG EAST play. UConn made it to the BIG EAST Championship against four-time defending champion Denver, making an impressive comeback but ultimately falling to the Pios 16-14. UConn was picked second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, behind Denver.
Players to Watch:
Senior defender and captain Riley Daly comes into the season fresh off being named 2025 BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In her junior season, Daly recorded 43 draw controls, 32 ground balls, and caused 21 turnovers. Daly and graduate attacker Eliza Bowman were both named captains prior to the season. Daly was one of three Huskies to be unanimously selected to the preseason all-conference team. R-Junior attacker Rayea Davis joined Daly, UConn's leading returning goal scorer after notching 44 goals in 2024. Sophomore defender Abby Beran rounds out the preseason selections for the Huskies after a standout freshman season that saw her named to the 2024 All-BIG EAST First Team, along with Davis, Daly, and three graduating seniors.
Drexel Snapshot:
The Dragons come to town ranked 24th in the country in the Inside Lacrosse/Women's Coaching Association Top 25 Poll. In 2024, Drexel secured their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth season in a row, falling in the first round to Princeton. Goalkeeper Jenika Cuocco headlines the Dragons, named a preseason All-American and 2025 CAA Preseason Player of the Year. Cuocco finished 2024 second in the country in saves and the leader in save percentage (.569).
Three other Drexel players joined Cuocco on the CAA preseason team. Allison Drake made the all-conference second team in 2024 with 45 goals. Ellie Wall made the 2024 All-CAA Rookie Team with 15 goals and 5 ground balls, and Camryn Ryan, who received an all-CAA Tournament team selection last season, causing 22 turnovers and picking up 23 ground balls.
Drexel is coached by Katie O'Donnell, who enters her fourth season as the head coach, and second after her interim tag was removed in 2023. O'Donnell took down two ranked opponents in 2024 and entered 2025 picked second in the CAA Preseason Poll.
