Morrison Sets Program Outdoor Long Jump Record on Day 1 of Northeast Challenge
STORRS- UConn track and field kicked off Day 1 of the Northeast Challenge at home in Storrs at the George J Sherman Family Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. The men's team concluded the first day in first with 54 points, 24 points ahead of second-place Rhode Island. The women's team also finished the first day in the lead with 54 points, 28 points ahead of URI.
Headlining the first day of competition, Marc Morrison (Orlando, Fla.) continued his legendary UConn career, setting the outdoor program record in the outdoor long jump, winning the event at 7.82m.
Multi-Events (Day 1)
- Diarmuid O'Connor (Cork, Ireland) finished the day at the front of the pack in the decathlon with 4,069 points.
- Maresa Hense (Germany) closed Day 1 of the heptathlon in the lead, with 3,362 points, winning the 200m and the shot put.
Men's Field:
- Patrick Oatman (Amston, Conn.) finished 2nd in the pole vault at 4.70m, with Kyle Kurtz (Bethel, Conn.) claiming 3rd at 4.40m.
- Connor Hayford (Pittsfield, Mass.) secured 2nd place in the javelin throw at 64.29m.
- Travis Roux (Northport, N.Y.) finished 4th in the discus at 50.36m
- Following Morrison's record-breaking performance in the long jump, Kasey Savage (Horsham, Pa.) took second at 7.42m, with Kyle Johnson (Montverde, Fla.) completing the event sweep at 7.12m.
Women's Field:
- Emily Alty (Ashburn, Ontario) finished 4th in the discus with a throw of 47.44m. Gabriela DeFelice (New Canaan, Conn.) set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 46.92m.
- Rachel Mason (Sussex, NJ) won the pole vault at 3.72m.
- Caitlin Dumouchel (Mansfield, Mass.) set a new personal best in the javelin, with a throw of 45.92m to move up to 8th on the all-time program top 10 list. Brynn Madonna had a season best throw to take second at 43.61m.
- A'liyah Thomas (Linden, NJ) took second in the long jump at 5.92m. Zayin Roe (Richmond, Va.) secured third at 5.64m.
Wake Forest Invite:
- Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) set a new PR in the outdoor 1500m, with a time of 4:19.11. The performance ranks 5th all-time in program history.
- Travis Martin (New Haven, Conn.) competed in the men's 1500m, finishing in 3:42.85.
Up Next: The Northeast Challenge concludes tomorrow, kicking off at 10:45 am with the men's decathlon 110 meter hurdles.
