Alex Heard Wins BIG EAST Individual Title; Earns NCAA Regionals Spot
OKATIE, S.C. – UConn sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned a bid to the 2025 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals after taking home the individual title at the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP on Monday afternoon.
Heard took a two-stroke lead into the final day of the three-round tournament at the Callawassie Island Golf Club on Monday, and built on it by shooting four-under (68) to finish an impressive -11 for the tournament, winning by six strokes in the 53-player field.
The sophomore takes home medalist honors for the first time in his career and did so posting the best scores of his young career. He was under par for all three rounds, finishing with at career-low score of 205 (71-66-68) and his second-round score of 66 marked a new career low as well. It was his third top-10 finishes of the season.
Heard, who finished 28th in last year's BIG EAST field, was the tournament's top player on the all the par 4's (3.80 avg) and par 5's (4.33 avg.) and tied with Marquette's Patrick Adler for the tournament lead with 16 birdies.
The Huskies wrapped the tournament tying for fourth place with Villanova in the 10-team field. UConn posted a three-day total of 872 (289-291-292). The Marquette Golden Eagles took home the team title, finishing -17 (847), 11-strokes better than Xavier in second place to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Senior Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) finished tied for 26th place playing in his first career BIG EAST tournament, shooting 221 (74-73-74). Junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) posted a 223 (73-76-74) to finish tied for 32nd.
Sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, Conn.) finished tied for 39th with a three-round score of 225 (73-76-76) and senior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, Mass.) rounded out the UConn contingent in a tie for 43rd place with a score of 229 (72-81-76).
Heard becomes the third Husky to win individual medalist honors and first since Caleb Manuel captured the title in 2022. Brian Ahern took home the top-spot in 1994.
Heard will now wait to see where he will be headed to one of the six 54-hole regional tournaments on May 12-14. The selection show will air live on Wednesday, April 30, at 1 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
