Abby Beran Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

STORRS, Conn.- Sophomore defender Abby Beran (Wading River, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

In a must-win regular season finale for the Huskies, Beran tied her career-high with four caused turnovers in UConn's 15-9 victory over Georgetown on Saturday. Beran picked up three ground balls in the victory as well.

Beran has followed up her 2024 BIG EAST First Team selection with a strong sophomore season, leading the conference with 3.00 ground balls/game. The sophomore defender ranks second in the conference with 1.88 caused turnovers/game.

This is the second time this season that Beran has earned defensive player of the week honors, picking up the award on April 7th after UConn's win over Denver.

UConn will take on the Villanova Wildcats in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals. Both teams come into the matchup at 4-2 in conference play, with UConn as the No.3 seed and 'Nova as the No.2 seed. UConn is looking to avenge their loss to 'Nova on March 22nd, dropping their regular season matchup 11-7. The winner of the UConn/Villanova matchup will face off against the winner of No.1 Denver/No.4 Georgetown in the championship game on Saturday, May 3rd at 6:00pm.
