Huskies Fall to Marquette in 3 Sets
Milwaukee, Wis. – The UConn women's fell to Marquette Saturday evening in three sets. Sophomore Emma Werkmeister led the way for the Huskies with eight kills.
The Huskies battled to the end with Marquette, however, self-inflicted errors hurt the Huskies each set and allowed Marquette to consistently build upon their leads. In the first set, the Golden Eagles and Huskies traded blows early. Following a Marquette scoring run, the Huskies called a timeout to regroup. Coming out of the timeout. Marquette continued to build upon their lead and eventually took the first set by a final of 25-19.
Following the first set, Marquette's offense found their stride and the Huskies defense had a challenging task of trying to contain them. Senior Karly Berkland was strong for the Huskies, registering 17 receptions, and 18 digs, however when UConn countered, the Golden Eagles defense was there to prevent UConn from going on a run. Over the three sets, the Huskies recorded 32 total errors, which made it difficult to come back from.
In the third and final set, UConn and Marquette traded points, with UConn jumping out to an early lead. UConn relied heavily on its serving in the third set to help them build a lead, but once again hitting errors allowed Marquette to fight their way back into the set and eventually come away with the conference win.
