Softball opens Creighton Series with dominant win
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Creighton Bluejays, 10-2 in a five inning run rule on Friday night at Burrill Family Field.
Hallie Siems made her 20th start of the season for the Huskies. She went 4.0 innings giving up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts, picking up her ninth win of the season.
The Huskies jumped on Creighton early, scoring five runs in the first inning, sending all nine batters to the plate. Rosie Garcia started the rally coming inches away from her ninth homer of the season. She doubled off the top of the wall in center field, scoring Lexi Hastings from first base. Lauren Benson brought in the Huskies second run with a ground out, scoring Garcia. Haley Coupal continued the rally with a single down the left field line, scoring Hope Jenkins from third base. Giuliana Abruscato capped off the big inning with a double off the left center field wall, scoring Jana Sanden and Coupal.
UConn added to their lead in the second inning scoring two more runs. Grace Jenkins came home on a Creighton wild pitch, scoring from third base. Benson delivered a two run single to right center field, scoring Sanden and Garcia, giving Benson three RBI's through the first two innings.
Creighton got on the scoresheet in the third inning, scoring two runs.
UConn's offense quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third inning. Hastings legged out her first triple of the season, scoring Abruscato from second base. Grace Jenkins followed Hastings with her second double of the game, scoring Hastings and putting the game in run rule territory at 10-2.
Hope Jenkins came in to close out the win, making her 15th appearance of the season in the circle.
