Softball falls to Creighton in Extra Innings

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team lost a close game to the Creighton Bluejays, 2-1 in eight innings at Burrill Family Field on Saturday afternoon.

Payton Kinney made her 13th start of the season for the Huskies. Kinney was dominant in the circle going 7.1 innings, only giving up two hits, and setting a new career high with 15 strikeouts. The senior retired 18 straight Creighton batters after giving up a double in the first inning.

The game was a pitcher's duel throughout as both teams combined for only three hits through the first five innings.

UConn broke through in the sixth inning as Lexi Hastings legged out an inside the park home run, putting the Huskies in front 1-0. This is Hastings second inside the park home run of the season.

Creighton responded in the top of the seventh with a solo home run off the bat of Madeline Vejvoda, making it 1-1 and sending the game to extra innings.

Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Kinney with one out in the eighth inning. She went 0.2 inning, giving up one hit with a strikeout.

Creighton took the lead in the eighth inning on a single, giving the Bluejays the lead for good.

UConn kept battling in the bottom of the eighth, putting the tying run on third base, but the Huskies could not find the big hit to keep the game going.
