Softball closes out St. John's Series with a comeback win
QUEENS, N.Y. – The UConn softball team bounced back in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, defeating the St. John's Red Storm, 8-3. The Huskies scored eight unanswered runs to avoid their first conference series sweep since 2021.
Hallie Siems made her 19th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. She went 1.2 innings giving up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
St. John's jumped out in front, 1-0 in the first inning and extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning.
Payton Kinney came on in relief for Siems in the second inning, making her 13th appearance of the season. Kinney shut down the Red Storm lineup tossing 3.2 scoreless innings only giving up one hit and adding five strikeouts, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Rosie Garcia gave the Huskies offense life in the third inning with a two run triple off the top of the fence in right field, trimming into the deficit to make it 3-2.
UConn tied the game at three in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a St. John's error. Lexi Hastings singled to the shortstop who threw the ball away trying to get Kaitlyn Kibling advancing to third base allowing Kibling to come home on the throw.
UConn took the lead for good in the sixth inning as the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs setting the stage for the big inning. Jana Sanden gave UConn the lead with a single to center field, scoring Haley Coupal. Hope Jenkins delivered a two run double to left field, scoring Hastings and Grace Jenkins, making it 6-3 Huskies.
Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Kinney in the sixth inning as she closed out the game in the circle for the Huskies, picking up her fourth save of the year. She tossed 1.2 scoreless innings not allowing a hit and adding two strikeouts.
UConn added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. Hastings drove in her second run of the day, singling to left field, scoring Savannah Ring. Grace Jenkins followed Hastings with a single to right field to score Hastings, making it 8-3 Huskies.
