Softball Evens the Series with Villanova

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats, 5-4 on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Burrill Family Field. UConn's Rosie Garcia scored all the Huskies runs with two home runs, the third multi-home run game of her career.

Payton Kinney made her 15th start of the season for the Huskies. She went 4.0 innings giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Kinney was dominant through the first three innings retiring nine of the first eleven batters she faced.

UConn jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off the bat of Rosie Garcia as she hit a two run home run to left field, putting the Huskies in front.

In the third inning Garcia once again took Villanova's starter Kat Gallant deep, this time to right center field, a three run shot to extend the lead to 5-0. Garcia now has a team high ten homers this season.

Villanova trimmed into the Huskies lead with a four run fifth inning.

Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Kinney in the middle of the fifth inning in a high leverage situation with runners on the corners and zero outs. After giving up three straight hits to the first three batters she faced, O'Neil settled in, retiring the next nine straight batters, shutting down the Wildcats potent lineup and helping UConn even up the series.
