Softball drops the series to Villanova

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team fell to the Villanova Wildcats 4-2 in the series finale at Burrill Family Field.

Hallie Siems made her 27th start of the season for the Huskies. Siems went 6.0 innings giving up four runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts.

UConn jumped out to an early lead in the second inning off the bat of Jana Sanden as the Connecticut native hit a solo homer, her sixth of the season, putting the Huskies in front 1-0.

Villanova responded in the third inning with a solo homer of their own from Kelsey White, knotting the game at one.

Villanova captured the lead in the fourth inning as Kelsey White delivered another big hit for the Wildcats, making it 2-1.

UConn quickly responded back with a run in the bottom half of the fourth, tying the game at two. Senior outfielder Giuliana Abruscato hit a sacrifice fly deep into foul territory in left field, allowing pinch runner Rayah Snyder to score from third base.

Payton Kinney came on in relief for Siems at the start of the fifth inning. Kinney only faced four batters giving up a pair of walks and a double to load the bases. Siems then re-entered for Kinney and was able to get two straight outs to get the Huskies out of the jam unscathed.

Villanova regained the lead in the sixth inning on a base hit from Elaina Wagner, making it 3-2.

Villanova added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a single from Chloe Smith, extending the deficit to 4-2.

UConn now moves to 27-22 on the year and 13-8 in conference play with one series left in the regular season.
