Huskies are BIG EAST Championship Bound

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The UConn women's lacrosse team (11-6, 6-1) advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game after defeating the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday evening at the BIG EAST Tournament.

The Hoyas struck first on a hot day in Cincy to begin the semifinal game. UConn answered with a goal from Susan Lafountain and then another from Morgan Carter to take their first lead of the game. After three unanswered goals by Georgetown in the middle of the first quarter, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run, scoring four more in the first to make the game 6-4.

The second quarter proved to be strong for the Huskies, as they notched another four goals and held the Hoyas scoreless. Veteran goalkeeper, Landyn White, made five saves between the pipes to thwart the Georgetown offense. The score was 10-4 heading into halftime.

The Hoyas launched a comeback attempt in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 5-1 in the third quarter. The UConn lone goal came from grad student, Eliza Bowman, her second of the match. The Hoyas tied the game up in the fourth at 11 apiece with 10:10 left to play. Rayea Davis and Lafountain each notched another goal for the Huskies, solidifying the win.

White made 16 saves in the win, just one off the record in a BIG EAST Championship game, and two away from her season-high of 18. Junior, Riley Daly, had seven draw controls, while Maddy George had five and Abby Beran had two. Kate Shaffer, Susan Lafountain, and Morgan Carter each notched three goals for the Huskies, while Rayea Davis and Eliza Bowman each had two.

This is the second year in a row that the 2-seed Huskies have advanced to the Championship game vs 1-seed Denver.

Opening draw for the BIG EAST Championship game is set for 12:00pm EST. The game will be nationally televised on FS2.
