Huskies Rally for Road Win at Georgetown in Postseason Preview

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attacker Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) gave the Huskies the lead with 2:51 left in the fourth quarter and UConn held off Georgetown the rest of the way to come away with a 9-8 BIG EAST win on the road in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Huskies end the regular season with a 5-1 BIG EAST mark to earn the No. 2 seed in this week's coming conference tournament.  UConn picked up their 10th win overall and move to 10-6 heading into the postseason.  Saturday's match-up was a preview of BIG EAST Semifinals as the Huskies and Hoyas, the No. 3 seed, will face-off again on Thursday.

Georgetown sprinted out a 4-0 lead and held a 4-2 edge after the first quarter before the UConn defense would settle in and let the Husky offense go to work.  The Huskies overcame 20 turnovers on the afternoon but didn't turn it over at all in the fourth quarter to help fuel their comeback.

UConn pulled even at 5-5 in the second quarter on Susan Lafoutain's (Rochester, N.Y.) second goal of the first half but Georgetown's Kylie Hazen sent the Hoyas into the locker room with a 6-5 lead thanks to her second with just two seconds left on the clock before half. Maley Starr gave the Hoyas a two-goal edge at 13:23 in the third, 7-5, but the Huskies would hold Georgetown to just one goal the rest of the way.

The Huskies ripped off three-straight goals from Lauren Barry (Wilbraham, Mass.), Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Eliza Bowman (Darien, Conn.) to take their first lead of the afternoon.  Bowman's go-ahead goal, her third of the day, came at 5:18 in the fourth off a feed from Davis.  Georgetown's Starr knotted the game up at 8-8 with 4:32 left on her third goal of the day but the Huskies once again had an answer.

Shaffer drew an 8-meter attempt and the senior delivered, burying her 40th goal of the season for what proved to be the UConn game-winner with 2:51 left.  The Hoyas took the ensuing draw but a turnover put the ball in the Huskies hands they never gave it back, icing away the final 1:45 for the win.

The Hoyas held a 24-19 edge on shots but UConn goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) made 11 saves to earn the win.  UConn held a 14-7 edge on draws.

In addition to Bowman's three goals, Lafountain had two goals and two assists to pace the offense.  Davis scored once and assisted on two others.

UConn and Georgetown move on to the BIG EAST Tournament where they will meet in one of the semifinals on Thursday, May 2 at Xavier's Corcoran Field.
