Huskies Finish Day 1 at Outdoor BIG EAST Championships

BIG EAST Championships Day 1 Final Results

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's track & field teams took on day one at the 2024 BIG EAST Championships at Villanova Stadium.  

The Huskies got off to a confident start over three scored events of the 22 total events for the women and two scored events for the men. In the current standings, the women hold second place with 23.33 points following behind Villanova with 33.5 points. In third place is DePaul with 17 points, respectively. The UConn men currently hold third place with 14 points following behind Butler with 26 points and Villanova with 18 points.  

Highlighting the day for the women would be Natalia Surdej in the hammer throw. Surdej took silver with a mark of 59.06 meters (195'6.5"). Also, after four events in the heptathlon, Alyssa Elliott would lead the multis with 2,979 points with first place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and shot put. In second place, Katelyn Reid has 2,794 points with a strong first-place mark in the high jump. To round out the day for the women, Caroline Towle won the bronze medal in the 10,000m running a personal best time of 34:53.91. 

Alex Krause and Travis Roux headlined the day for the men with silver and bronze medals in the hammer throw throwing 56.16m and 56.12m, respectively. In the decathlon, Diarmuid O'Connor leads the way after five events with first-place finishes in the high jump and the 400m with a total of 4,057 points. In second place is Josh Mooney with 3,739 points including a first-place finish in the 100 meters running 10.94 seconds. 

The second day continues Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11 starting at 2 p.m. ET on Friday and 1 p.m. The decathlon will be the first event of the day at 10 a.m. ET Friday. In men's decathlon, PR for Diarmuid O'Connor in HJ (1st, 1.96m), PR for 400m (1st, 48.39) leads with 4,057 points after five events, in second place with 3,739 points is Josh Mooney; in 100m (1st, 10.94) 

Alex Krause in HT (2nd, 56.16m), Travis Roux (3rd, 56.12m) 

For the women: 

In women's heptathlon, PR for Alyssa Elliott 100mH (1st, 14.72), PR in SP (1st, 10.87m), PR in 200m (2nd, 25.95) leads with 2,979 points after four events, in second place with 2,974 points Katelyn Reid; HJ (1st, 1.60m) 

Natalia Surdej in HT (2nd, 59.06m), Emily Alty (5th, 50.86m) 

Patricia Mroczkowski in HJ (4th, 1.70m)
