Huskies Head to Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's golf team heads back to South Carolina this week to take part in the Golfweek Invitational at True Blue Golf Club on Monday through Wednesday, April 1st to 3rd.
The Huskies will play in the three-round tournament on the par 72, 6,978 yard course in Pawleys Island, S.C. UConn is part of an 18-team field that also includes Central Arkansas, North Alabama, James Madison, Southern Illinois, Valparaiso, Richmond, Marshall, Xavier, Denver, Austin Peay, Northern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Kansas City, LIU, Stephen F. Austin, USC Upstate and Ohio.
UConn is coming off an appearance at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational last week where they finished seventh overall but were led by a BIG EAST Golfer of the week performance from freshman Bradley Sawka (Ellington, Conn.).
The Huskies return to the Golfweek/AGT event after tie for second place at last year's event. UConn shot -2 as a team, finishing at 862 (293-284-285) for three rounds. Senior Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) had a top-20 finish, tying for 16th after shooting one-under (75-69-71=215). Former Husky Jared Nelson won the event shooting -9 under.
Playing as an individual, Sawka, shot six-under for the tournament to finish in a three-way tie for second place and just a stroke off the top-spot. The freshman was under par in all three rounds and matched his low round (69) and low tournament score (210) on the season. He became the fourth different Husky to grab BIG EAST weekly honors this season.
After his strong outing, Sawka finds himself in this week's five-man lineup and is joined by senior Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), classmate Alex Heard (Boca Raton, Fla.), junior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, Mass.) and senior Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.). Sophomore Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) will play as an individual this week.
Sawka has played 10 of his 18 rounds this season at par or better, matching Dallahan for the team lead. He also became the fourth Husky this season to record a top-10 finish this season.
Following this week's tournament the Huskies will have a week off before they play in their final tune-up event before the conference championship. UConn heads to Penn State for The Rutherford Invitational at the Penn State Blue Course on April 13 and 14.
