- Oct 79:30 AMPhilosophy Talk: Reimagining AI - How We Talk About AI and Why It Matters? With the increasing impacts of artificial intelligence (AI), various issues surrounding AI have become issues of public interest. But what is AI? Is the way we talk about AI a suitable reflection of its nature? How do the portrayals of AI shape our perception of it? Drawing on philosophical frameworks and empirical studies, this talk reflects on the dominant narratives surrounding AI and examines how they influence the public perception of AI. I argue that the dominant narratives about AI often overlook its materiality, including the hidden labor and environmental impacts. As a result, such a narrative fuels skewed priorities of the risks of AI, overly promotes techno-centric responses, and supports unjustified power concentration. Based on these critical reflections, this talk urges collective efforts to be taken in reimagining and shaping the narratives about AI. This is an Honors Event.
