- May 112:00 PMSeaward: Coastal Paintings by Jacqueline Jones and Mary TempleJacqueline Jones, influenced by the American Impressionists of the Old Lyme Art Colony, presents plein air and studio paintings of dynamic beauty. Her lively brushwork captures the fleeting effects of sunlight, subtle atmospheres of color, and the power of the tides along New England coastlines. Mary Temple's daily Coastal Sunrise paintings represent her experience of one view off the coast of Maine. Each painting, through intensity of color and a muscular application of thick oil paint, creates a maximal experience for the viewer which is surprisingly inventive and deeply satisfying. The exhibition will be on view alongside the concurrent exhibition Harmony of Nature II: Waves Exhibition dates: April 2- May 4. Reception: April 2, 5:30-7:30 pm. Hours: Th-Sun. 12-4 pm
- May 112:00 PMUNIV 1810: Ideas + Impact Final Project PitchOn Thursday, May 1st, the UNIV 1810 class will be presenting their Final Projects with their teams, and we would love for you to join us if your schedules align. Feel free to contact me via email with any questions - alexander.ali@uconn.edu Final Project: UConn Waterbury & Beyond The purpose of the final project is to encourage students to become leaders both within and outside of our UConn Waterbury campus. Students will work with their assigned groups to develop a project that positively impacts the city of Waterbury OR the UConn Waterbury community. They were encouraged to be creative with their project! My only requirement was that they adhere to the project budget of $4,000 (an equivalent of the Change Grant) and propose a way to physically be able to track data to measure their impact on the community. If students would like to exceed the $4,000 budget, they will also need to develop a way to raise additional funds. If interested, they were encouraged to explore other funding sources on our UConn Waterbury website and/or write a mock funding request to campus leadership. On our final day of class (May 1st), they will present their ideas via a PowerPoint presentation (minimum of 8 slides).

Her research focuses on behavioral interventions for diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention in at-risk maternal and adult populations. Her work targets patient engagement in preventive health behaviors and preventive healthcare services; and engagement in clinical research itself, such as strategies to improve representation in randomized clinical trials. Dr. Brown leads several programs to promote high-quality mentoring of research trainees across career levels, including as Associate Director of the Mentoring Academy for Research Excellence in the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center. Dr. Brown serves on the editorial board of the journal Diabetes Care, and is an elected Fellow of both the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research.
- May 11:00 PMGentle Therapeutic YogaYogais protective and enlivening. Freeing you from habitual patterns of tension, this yoga creates a sense of spaciousness within, dissolves stress, strengthens core muscles, joint health, centeredness, postural alignment and groundedness, increases breath capacity and breath awareness, shifts stagnant emotions into movement and release, and is attentive to the subtle stuff of the mind, helping to free us from the driving forces of unconscious actions and thoughts. You'll practice yogic techniques that you can bring into your everyday experience for simply living a good day, and for increasing your capacity to be creatively present in your life. A yogic attitude toward self and practice is one of kindness, patience, and tenderness. We grow into our best selves in an inner atmosphere of loving care. Open to all UConn students, faculty and staff from any campus. No experience required.
- May 11:00 PMWebinar: Free and Open Source GIS Tools – Part 2 of 2Hosts: UConn CLEAR Speakers: Ashley Benitez & Carl Zimmerman, CT GIS Office This 45-minute introductory presentation is the second in a two-part series on free and open source GIS. It will cover the new and broad ecosystem of GIS and geospatial tools (e.g. viewers, scripting tools and desktop applications), explain how to choose the right tools for your set of uses cases, access public data, and how to conduct simple spatial analyses with QGIS. Attendees will learn about free geospatial software and GIS tools which are widely available, reliable, and powerful. Many have the capabilities of expensive commercial products from the industry leaders. Free tools such as these provide substantial analytic and visualization capabilities to organizations needing location data and visualization solutions such as non-profits, small businesses, land-trusts, and local governments. These tools can be used in conjunction with a variety of public data sets including elevation and parcel data from Connecticut, the federal government, and other entities. This webinar will cover core use cases and processing that small organizations need to map and analyze their data. Register here (https://uconn-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_riG0Gec4TDWEyii8Tniu7w)

- May 13:30 PMMathematics Colloquium, Conformal Measures for Conformal Dynamics, Mariusz Urbanski (University of North Texas)Conformal measures were introduced in the early 1970's by Samuel Patterson in the context of Fuchsian groups. In the early 1980s, Dennis Sullivan extended this concept to Kleinian groups and rational functions. In the middle of the 1990's, conformal measures were introduced to the setting of conformal countable alphabet iterated function systems by Dan Mauldin and the speaker. Their primary goal is to understand geometric measures, such as Hausdorff or packing, and metric dimensions, such as Hausdorff, packing, and box, of dynamically self-conformal sets that include limit sets of Kleinian groups and conformal IFSs, and Julia sets of rational functions and transcendental meromorphic functions. I will discuss relations between conformal and geometric measures and will provide more applications of the latter to fractal geometry.
