- All dayYIIP - Now Accepting ApplicationsCall for Applications The Young Innovative Investigator Program (YIIP) is a 2-year program of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering which aims to develop the next generation of innovative scientists by providing academic training to individuals dedicated to pursuing careers as scientists and scholars in biological and biomedical science. The program is specifically focused on recruiting underrepresented students to contribute towards developing a sustainable pipeline to increase diversity among the pool of academic scientists. YIIP provides tools for scholars to conduct research, succeed in an academic environment, and become competitive candidates for medical school and/or graduate school. YIIP Scholars will acquire the expertise necessary to obtain a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. Overview: YIIP is an intensive research program for college graduates comprised of graduate level coursework and mentored research in biomedical laboratories at the University of Connecticut (Farmington and Storrs campuses). It provides individualized mentorship, academic support, and career guidance. YIIP Scholars earn a stipend and qualify for health insurance coverage. In addition, some tuition expenses and fees associated with required graduate level courses are waived. Upon successful completion of year one, scholars obtain a Graduate Certificate of Research Experience in Biomedical Science. In year two, Scholars who meet the academic qualifications pursue a Master of Science in Biomedical Science involving innovative mentored research. Eligibility: The selection committee is committed to the principle of IDEAL, which stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism, and Learning, as a plan to achieve justice and equity. A priority for the program is increasing (1) individuals traditionally underrepresented and marginalized in the biomedical sciences and (2) first-generation students. For more information about IDEAL please visit: https://www.aiche.org/equity-diversity-inclusion/statement. All applicants must: • Have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of an overall 3.0 GPA. • Demonstrate high motivation and potential to become a basic scientist with a goal of attaining a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or M.D. • Meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program. • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. For more information, please visit our website: https://health.uconn.edu/regenerative-engineering-institute/young-innovative-investigator-program/ or contact: Jolene Monahan Wilding Program Manager monahanwilding@uchc.edu or Gualberto Ruaño, M.D., Ph.D. Assistant Director, Special Projects ruano@uchc.edu Due to the competitiveness of the program, YIIP has a shorter application timeline, than the dates indicated by The Graduate School for Fall 2025 enrollment. Apply at the Graduate School's Website by Sunday March 30th, 2025. In addition to the standard graduate school requirements, please submit a copy of your Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV), a Personal Statement of Interest and Professional Goals, a Narrative on Research Experience, a Statement describing how your past, present, and future achievement will serve to advance the program's commitment to the principle of IDEAL, and two letters of recommendation. For more information about IDEAL please visit: https://www.aiche.org/equity-diversity-inclusion/statement. As we are committed to promoting a diverse graduate community, the Graduate School has agreed to waive the $75 non-refundable application fee for prospective YIIP students. - 11:00 AM1hMaster's Thesis Defense, Rashmi PaiAbstract: Risk-limiting audits (RLAs) are techniques for verifying the outcome of large elections. Competitive audits are a new class of post-election audits that help directly handle contestation of election results affirmed by conventional RLAs (Fuller, Pai, Russell USENIX Security 2024). Competitive audits are able to effectively distinguish cast-vote records (CVRs) that are consistent with the ballots in an election, and those that are invalid, thus reconciling competing claims of victory made by two or more CVRs. This audit process allows candidates or groups (known as advocates) to submit competing CVRs that will then go through a pairwise disqualification process that involves pulling ballots and comparing its interpretation across both records. This process continues until a single CVR remains, which is considered to be the most consistent to the physical ballots in the election. While competitive audits have different assumptions than RLAs, they are desirable due to the ability to achieve exponentially small error in the number of ballots selected. In their current formulation, advocates identify a set of possible interpretations for each ballot to prevent from being disqualified. A potential issue with this is that this could keep any honest party from being able to declare victory. We define a new type of post-election audit we call Bayesian Competitive Audits, which uses Bayesian CVRs that define a probability distribution over all possible interpretations for each ballot in the election. This new audit allows advocates to submit Bayesian CVRs with competing claims of victory. In this approach, advocates are incentivized to submit their honest evaluation of each ballot rather than interpreting ballots to keep from being disqualified. The classical sequential probability ratio test provides a statistical test for disqualifying contradictory CVRs, and selecting the CVR closest to the ground truth distribution. More interestingly, we define two different error models that account for an epsilon amount of error made by an advocate while creating a competing CVR. These correspond to roughly L-infinity and L1 norms respectively. We show auditors in both situations, proving that both audits are sound for an arbitrary method of selecting ballots.

- 2:30 PM1hUConn Physics ColloquiumProf. Dr. Ralf S. Klessen, Universität HeidelbergThe First Stars: Formation, Properties, and Impact The first generation of stars, often called Population III (or Pop III), form from metal-free primordial gas at redshifts z ~ 30 and below. They dominate the cosmic star formation history until z ~ 20-15, at which point the formation of metal-enriched Pop II stars takes over. I review current theoretical models for the formation, properties and impact of Pop III stars, and discuss observational constraints. I argue that primordial gas is highly susceptible to fragmentation and Pop III stars form as members of small clusters with a logarithmically flat mass function. Feedback from massive Pop III stars plays a central role in regulating subsequent star formation, but major uncertainties remain regarding its immediate impact. Direct observations of Pop III stars in the early Universe remain extremely challenging, whereas stellar archeological surveys allow us to constrain both the low-mass and the high-mass ends of the Pop III mass distribution. Observations suggest that most massive Pop III stars end their lives as core-collapse supernovae rather than as pair-instability supernovae. I also speculate about the formation of supermassive stars, which under very specific circumstances can get as massive as several 100.000 solar masses and can become the seeds of the supermassive black holes observed in the high-redshift universe.

- 7:30 PM2hNighttime Spring Herp Walk at Allanach-Wolf WoodlandsThe Connecticut State Museum of Natural History (https://csmnh.uconn.edu/) is partnering with Joshua's Tract Conservation and Historic Trust (https://joshuastrust.org/) to host these field-learning activities with Dr. Herrick as part of an ongoing research project to observe and track the herps that seek shelter in artificial habitats called coverboards throughout the Allanach-Wolf Woodlands. Dr. Herrick is a professor at UConn who studies herpetology and behavioral ecology. During these guided hikes, she will explain the ecology and behavior of the herps that people would commonly encounter in Connecticut in their native habitat. Evening walk (Friday March 28) is recommended for participants aged 12 and up, and those who are comfortable traversing the woods at night. Those 16 and under must be accompanied by a chaperone! * These events are free and open to the public! ** Space is limited and separate registration is required for each event!!! * Information about the morning walk can be found here:https://s.uconn.edu/morning-herp-walk-sp2025 These hikes may be challenging for some and will include hilly, wet areas and forays off trail to view coverboards and wade into vernal pools or ponds. Heavy-weight, water proof boots are recommended, as are pants and headlamps. Vernal pools may be up to adults' knees – wear your waders if you've got them! These events will be held rain or shine!
