- All dayApply to Become a Pepper ScholarThe Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) at UConn (P30 AG067988; Kuchel, Fortinsky - MPIs) is one of fifteen such centers throughout the United States funded by the National Institute on Aging at NIH. "Pepper Centers" honor Claude D. Pepper, the late Congressman who advocated for senior health and research to enable older adults to maintain or restore their independence. The overarching goal of the OAIC (Pepper) Program is to enhance function and independence in older adults through research. The UConn Pepper Center is pioneering a theme focused on Precision Gerontology, an approach to aging research and the care of older adults that seeks to render interventions enhancing function and independence more effective through an improved understanding of heterogeneity and more precise targeting (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/). A key component of all Pepper Centers is the Research Education Component (REC), which provides financial support, education, and training to Pepper Scholars who Pepper Center leadership identify as showing particular promise as independent investigators. The REC at the UConn Pepper Center, led by Dr. David Steffens and Dr. George Kuchel, includes senior research leaders at UConn and Jackson Lab who could serve as mentors to Pepper Scholars (https://health.uconn.edu/pepper-center/research-and-education-component-rec/). A mentored research project is a primary focus of being a REC Scholar. We are issuing this solicitation to early stage faculty with an interest in aging-related research. Individuals with experience in this area are encouraged to apply, as are those with research backgrounds in non-aging related fields whose research might be enhanced with a new aging focus. Physician scientists and clinicians in other disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. We anticipate funding two new UConn Pepper Scholars through this competition. Funding for two Pepper Scholar positions would begin July 1, 2025. Pepper Scholar awards are typically awarded for one year, with a second year of funding based on evidence of progress and need. Since this award is taking place in year 5 of the current UConn Pepper Center funding cycle, a year 2 Pepper Scholar Award will also be contingent upon the parent grant's successful competitive renewal. The overall goals of the Pepper Center are focused on improving function and independence among older adults. As such the following criteria for Pepper Scholar Selection were developed to be consistent with these goals: • Trainee potential and commitment to an academic career • Demonstrated commitment to aging research • Alignment of proposed training and work with the broader mission of the NIA OAIC Pepper Center Program and the focus on UConn Pepper Center on Precision Gerontology • Availability and commitment of suitable mentorship • Ability to benefit from OAIC resources As an initial step prior to submitting a full Pepper Scholar application, we are requesting that potential candidates submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), due by 5 PM on January 17, 2025. The LOI should be one single-spaced page consisting of two paragraphs. The first paragraph should highlight aspects of the candidate's educational, training, and research background that are most relevant to the Pepper Scholar program, followed by a statement of how the candidate will benefit from the Pepper Scholars program. The second paragraph should include a brief description of the research project that will be supported by the Pepper Center REC. In addition to the LOI, candidates should submit either an NIH Biosketch (preferred) or a CV. The LOI and Biosketch/CV should be addressed to Dr. David Steffens, REC Core Leader and Dr. George Kuchel, REC Core Co-Leader, and emailed to Ms. Laura Masi at masi@uchc.edu Selected candidates will then be notified by January 31, 2025 and invited to submit a full application for the Pepper Scholar Program for a March 28, 2025 deadline.

- 12:15 PM1hUCHI Faculty Talk: Gary English on Theatre as DialecticsTheatre and other forms of cultural production provide a valuable means to discover how populations respond to forms of oppression and political processes connected to attempts at reconciliation in post-conflict. To attain a renewed national unity in some post-conflict settings, states and international organizations who pursue the dual objectives of peace and reconciliation utilize forms of transitional justice that emphasize the "healing" of victims and the reintegration of perpetrators as a higher priority than criminal accountability through rule of law. A dialectic, or dichotomy, then emerges between the objectives of justice, through accountability, and reconciliation such that imperatives for peace and stability allow one to be sacrificed to achieve the other. Employing research connected to the emerging discourse on irreconciliation and dynamics related to the dualities of "memory and forgetting" and "justice and reconciliation" Gary English explores how theatre production critiques this dichotomy by insisting that justice and a positive peace cannot be achieved without criminal accountability regarding the most egregious violations of international law. In addition, this talk examines how accountability through international law becomes frustrated by the strategic interests of donor states who utilize coercive approaches in development to enforce an unjust, or negative peace that essentially maintains the underlying forms of oppression as historically practiced.Gary M. English is stage director, designer, and a Distinguished Professor of Drama at the University of Connecticut and Affiliate Faculty with the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute with whom he has taught Theatre and Human Rights for ten years. From 2010 through 2018, he lived and worked in the West Bank for a total of four years, including two years in the Jenin Refugee Camp where he served as Artistic Director of The Freedom Theatre, (2012–13). He also served as Visiting Professor and Head of the Media Studies program at Al/Quds Bard College in Abu Dis, in the West Bank, (2017–18). His research focuses on theatre as a methodology to study human rights, and the use of theatre and cultural production to investigate the political conflict between Israel and Palestinians. His most recent book, Theatre and Human Rights: The Politics of Dramatic Form was published by Routledge in August, 2024. Previous publications include the volume, Stories Under Occupation and other Plays from Palestine, co-edited with Samer Al-Saber, and published by Seagull Press in 2020, and "Artistic Practice and Production at the Jenin Freedom Theatre" within the anthology, Theater in the Middle East: Between Performance and Politics. His most recent essay, "Palestinian Theatre: Alienation, Mediation and Assimilation in Cross Cultural Research" was recently released in the volume, Arabs, Politics and Performance, by Routledge in September, 2024.

- 4:00 PM1hStatistics Colloquium: Tumulesh Solanky, University of New Orleans, Distinguished Alumni AwardSome issues related to implementation and generalization of the partition problem formulations for normal populations Presented by Tumulesh Solanky, Chair and Professor, Department of Mathematics, The University of Louisiana System Foundation and Michael and Judith Russel Professor in Data Science/Computational Sciences, University of New OrleansWednesday, November 20, 2024, 4:00 PM, AUST 202 Coffee will be served at 3:30 pm in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Webex Meeting Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m5f080e0cca019d81183d412aec1dcc5b)Abstract: In the area of selection and ranking, partitioning of treatments by comparing them to a control treatment is an important statistical problem. For over eighty years this problem has been investigated by a number of researchers via various statistical designs to specify the partitioning criteria and optimal strategies for data collection. We have studied various aspects of several key formulation available in literature from a practitioner's point of view. The focus of the presentation would be on the design proposed in Tong (1969) which had utilized Bechhofer's (1954) indifference-zone concept to partition treatments with respect to the control population. This formulation, had united a number of other formulations available in the statistical literature, and has since seen considerable interest from researchers. Focusing on the versatility of the Tong's formulation and its applications, a generalization of the Tong's formulation is presented to partition the treatments in the indifference zone as a separate identifiable group without altering basic idea of indifference zone. It is shown that the Tong's formulation is a limiting case of the proposed generalized formulation. For the proposed generalization, a purely sequential procedure and a two-stage procedures are presented along with their theoretical properties. An example is provided to illustrate the proposed generalization and several other procedures available in the literature.Bio: Tumulesh Solanky is a professor and chair of mathematics at the University of New Orleans (UNO), where he has been teaching for over three decades. For the past 16 years, he has also served as the department chair. Additionally, he holds the Michael and Judith Russell Professorship in Data/Computational Sciences. Throughout his career, Dr. Solanky has secured several hundred thousand dollars in sponsored research and has contributed extensively to academic literature, publishing books, book-chapters, and journal articles. Apart from his research and teaching, Dr. Solanky has served on various university committees and professional organizations. In recognition of his exceptional teaching and service, he received the Seraphia D. Leyda University Teaching Fellow Award in 2009 and the Cooper Mackin Medallion in 2018, the latter awarded to a faculty or staff member for outstanding contributions in support of the University's mission.

- 4:00 PM1h 30mTheatre & Human Rights: The Politics of Dramatic FormAbout the BookTheatre and Human Rights: The Politics of Dramatic Form develops theoretical intersections between theatre and human rights and provides methodologies to investigate human rights questions from within the perspective of theatre as a complex set of disciplines. While human rights research and programming often employ the arts as representations of human rights-related violations and abuses, this study focuses on dramatic form and structure, in addition to content, as uniquely positioned to interrogate important questions in human rights theory and practice. This project positions theatre as a method of examination in addition to the important purposes the arts serve to raise consciousness that accompany other, often considered more primary modes of analysis. A main feature of this approach includes emphasis on dialectical structures in drama and human rights and integration of applied theatre and critical ethnography with more traditional theatre. This integration will demonstrate how theatre and human rights operates beyond the arts as representation model, offering a primary means of analysis, activism, and political discourse. This book will be of great interest to theatre and human rights practitioners and activists, scholars, and students. About the AuthorGary M. English is a Distinguished Professor of Drama at the University of Connecticut and Affiliate Faculty with the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute, with whom he has taught Theatre and Human Rights for ten years. From 2010 through 2018, he lived and worked in the West Bank for a total of four years, including two years in the Jenin Refugee Camp where he served as Artistic Director of The Freedom Theatre, (2012-13). He also served as Visiting Professor and Head of the Media Studies program at Al/Quds Bard College in Abu Dis, in the West Bank, (2017-18). His research focuses on Palestinian theatre, theatre as a methodology to study human rights, and the use of theatre and cultural production to investigate the political conflict between Israel and Palestinians. Theatre and Human Rights: The Politics of Dramatic Form was published by Routledge in August, 2024. Previous publications include the volume Stories Under Occupation and other Plays from Palestine, co-edited with Samer Al-Saber, and published by Seagull Press in 2020, and "Artistic Practice and Production at the Jenin Freedom Theatre" within the anthology Theater in the Middle East: Between Performance and Politics. His most recent essay, "Palestinian Theatre: Alienation, Mediation and Assimilation in Cross Cultural Research" was recently released in the volume Arabs, Politics and Performance by Routledge in September 2024. About this Event This event is sponsored by the Research Program on Arts & Human Rights, a collaborative program hosted at the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute led by faculty from the School of Fine Arts. This talk will take place in-person only in the Heritage Room, 4th Floor of Homer Babbidge Library, with a reception.
- 4:00 PM2hAmerican Dreams? An Encounters DialogueAMERICA AND IMMIGRATIONThe topic of Immigration dominated this year's elections. According to a Pew Research study, 61% of voters identified the issue of immigration as a top concern more than in years past. As the Brooking Institute explains, the United States is fundamentally built upon the contributions of immigrants. No other country in the world hosts as extensive an immigrant population as America. With the notable exception of individuals descended from Indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans, the majority of the population can trace some aspect of their lineage to immigrants, whether from recent arrivals or those who came centuries ago. Despite being a nation predominantly composed of immigrants and their descendants, citizenship remains elusive for some, and one of the most contentious social and political challenges of contemporary society. The ongoing debates surrounding who is permitted to enter the country, who is eligible to work, who can establish a family, and who can attain American citizenship continue to profoundly influence our political landscape. We invite you to participate in a structured conversation exploring the historical backdrop of U.S. immigration policies, the economic ramifications of immigration, and the personal narratives of individuals who are building their lives in a new country and making a home away from home. Encounters programs dive deep into subjects through facilitated, small-group dialogues followed by a question-and-answer style conversation with our UConn faculty and community partners. This event is hosted by the Democracy & Dialogues Initiative (https://humanrights.uconn.edu/areas-of-focus/democracy-dialogues/) and co-sponsored by the Connecticut Collaborative on Poverty, Criminal Justice, and Race (https://www.ctcollaborativeinfo.org/)This event is FREE and open to the public with dinner provided.
