- 3:30 PM1hMCB Seminar Series: Emma WatsonEmma WatsonAssistant Professor, Department of Systems Biology University of Massachusetts, Chan Medical School Host: Andrei AlexandrescuChromosomal structure and function in cancer Over 90% of cancer genomes have abnormal chromosomal composition, deviating (often significantly) from the normal 46 chromosomes in healthy cells. Chromosomes can be gained, lost, broken, and fused together during tumor genome evolution, with genomes ultimately converging on a set of features that are enriched in a tumor type-specific manner, for instance, +1q and +8q in breast cancer. We utilize in vitro approaches to model karyotype evolution in cancer and build tumor genomes in the lab from healthy diploid genomes. We use these models to uncover structural facilitators and functional drivers of these common chromosomal abnormalities in cancer.About Dr. Watson:Dr. Emma V. Watson obtained her B.S. in Biophysics from UConn, studying protein folding with Dr. Andrei Alexandrescu, and received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from UMass Chan Medical School studying metabolic gene network regulation with Dr. A. J. Marian Walhout. For her thesis work, Dr. Watson received an American Heart Association fellowship and the Harold M. Weintraub Award. Dr. Watson was a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Stephen J. Elledge's lab at Harvard Medical School, where she uncovered oncogenic roles of chromosomal abnormalities in cancer. Dr. Watson opened her lab at UMass Chan Medical School in 2022 where she focuses on cancer genome structure and function.Publications:Chromosome evolution screens recapitulate tissue-specific tumor aneuploidy patterns (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-024-01665-2)An aneuploidy epistasis map reveals metabolic vulnerabilities associated with supernumerary chromosomes in cancer (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.09.30.615609v1)Watson Lab website (https://www.watsonlabs.org/)

- 3:35 PM1h 10mRevisiting Nazrul's Gift: Liminality, Difference, and ActionThe work of Kazi Nazrul Islam has long been lauded as an example of decolonial activism and courage, yet there is more to the legacy that Nazrul leaves us than may neatly fit into his poetry, especially in respect to what Nazrul's life teaches us about turning theory into action and hope into change. This talk will revisit Nazrul's work as an illustration of the "third space," a space wherein claims to exclusivity and superiority are easily identified and dismantled before reflecting on the power of Nazrul's gift as the bridge between thought and action.Dr. Rachelle Elizabeth Fawcett has studied religion, spirituality, difference, and human spaces in various capacities for twenty years. She holds an MA in Islamic Studies and Muslim-Christian Relations from Hartford Seminary (now Hartford International) and a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from the Graduate Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California. Dr. Fawcett's work includes the topics of decoloniality, justice, neurodivergence, sexuality, gender, and difference in respect to religion and spirituality, with a consistent focus on changemaking toward communal flourishing. Please register using this link: https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/weblink/register/rf3174a5bb5d219246bfc37e844612a59 (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/weblink/register/rf3174a5bb5d219246bfc37e844612a59)A recording will also be posted after the event on the UConn Asian and Asian American Studies Institute YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@uconnaaasi1876/featured (https://www.youtube.com/@uconnaaasi1876/featured)This is an Honors Event.
