- 11:00 AM1hMarine Sciences Seminar: Raquel FlynnRaquel FlynnUniversity of North Carolina Phytoplankton's role in the biological pump during the growth season across the Atlantic Southern Ocean Southern Ocean phytoplankton growth is seasonally co-limited by light and iron availability. In winter, iron and macronutrients such as nitrate are supplied to surface waters during deep mixing events. Sea-ice melt and increased solar radiation in spring drive rapid stratification of surface waters, alleviating phytoplankton from light limitation and allowing them to consume the nutrients supplied in winter. In contrast to previous suggestions, although summer is the period of maximum biomass accumulation in the Southern Ocean, it may not be season associated with the highest rates of new production and carbon export potential. This finding can be explained by the increasing reliance of phytoplankton on regenerated nitrogen sources as the phytoplankton growth season progresses. In ice-adjacent waters, this shift is largely due to elevated ammonium availability rather than iron limitation, which may (partially) inhibit nitrate uptake. By contrast, in the open Southern Ocean, iron limitation drives the seasonal shift towards regenerated production because of the high iron requirement of nitrate uptake. In addition, we show that different phytoplankton groups are better adapted to different physicochemical conditions (e.g., Phaeocystis antarctica to deep mixed-layers versus diatoms to recently-stratified waters), with the dominance of one group over another acting to strengthen or weaken the Southern Ocean's biological carbon pump. Understanding the drivers of phytoplankton community composition is essential if we are to predict how phytoplankton will respond to a changing climate, and the implications of their response for the Southern Ocean's biological pump.Host: Katie CrowleyTime & Date: 11:00 am, Friday, September 20, 2024Place: Lowell Weicker Building, Seminar Room 103 (or WebEx)Request Seminar InformationCancellation & Additional Seminar Details (https://marinesciences.uconn.edu/seminar/seminar1248/) If you are an individual with a disability and need accommodations, please contact 860-405-9152 (tel:+18604059152) or email marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu (mailto:marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu).

- 12:15 PM1hGraduate Student SeminarProf. Aleksandra Kuznetsova, Department of Physics, University of ConnecticutThe Physics of Planet Formation Protoplanetary disks, rotationally supported accretion disks of gas and dust orbiting young stars, are the birthplaces of planetary systems. The physical conditions of these systems, and thus the environmental conditions of nascent planets, are set by an interplay of dynamical evolution and microphysical processes. In this talk, I will discuss current research directions in the field aimed at understanding what sets the inventory of planet building ingredients, their distribution, and evolution over time using a combination of multi-fluid hydrodynamic simulations and post-processing methods for comparison to observations.
- 12:15 PM1hPSLA Seminar Series: William (Ned) FriedmanHost: Julia SmachyloLocation: YNG 132Webex Link: s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars Professor William (Ned) Friedman is the eighth Director of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University (in its 152-year history) and Arnold Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. Friedman's scholarly studies have focused on the earliest phases of the evolution of flowering plants, Darwin's so-called "abominable mystery." He is also deeply interested in the history of pre-Darwinian evolutionary thought and particularly the largely forgotten contributions of horticulturists and botanists. As Director of the Arnold Arboretum, Friedman has worked to expand the Arboretum's efforts to promote ex situ conservation of endangered woody plant species through a focused ten-year initiative centered on eastern Asia and North America. He has also led the charge to increase societal impacts of the Arboretum through diverse initiatives in public programming, digital communications, enhanced dialogue between scientists and the public, and the promotion of scientific scholarship (especially global change research) within the living collections. As he continues to lead the Arboretum forward from its sesquicentennial year in 2022, two fundamental priorities will dominate the Arboretum's focus: environmental justice and combating climate change and extinction.

Abstract: Let X be a fractal, and let f be a function. Can f and its Fourier transform both concentrate near X? Harmonic analysts would like to answer this question because it's interesting. Hyperbolic geometers would like to answer this question because there's a way to produce fractals from hyperbolic surfaces, and then answering the question tells us something about how geodesics behave. I would like to answer this question because I want to draw some cool pictures of fractals on the whiteboards of Monteith.

- 3:30 PM1hUConn Physics ColloquiumProf. Mingda Li, Nuclear Science and Engineering, MITExploring Potential Roles of Machine Learning in Quantum Materials Research In recent years, machine learning has achieved great success in chemistry and materials science, but quantum materials face unique challenges. These include the scarcity of data (volume challenge), high dimensionality and computational costs (complexity challenge), elusive experimental signatures (experimental challenge), and unreliable ground truth (validation challenge). In this Physics Colloquium, we present our recent efforts to support the study of quantum materials with machine learning. For scenarios with high data volumes, such as density-functional-theory (DFT) level studies with weak correlation, machine learning can predict lower-dimensional properties. We introduce a convolutional neural network classifier predicting band topology class based on X-ray absorption (XAS) signals [1]. This approach can also be applied to experimental data, demonstrated by an autoencoder-based protocol to study the magnetic proximity effect with polarized neutron reflectometry, improving fitting resolution [2]. For lower data volumes due to higher computational costs, incorporating symmetry into neural networks can reduce data volume needs. Using the O(3) Euclidean neural network, we predict phonon density-of-states [3], dielectric functions [4], and quantum weight [5] directly from crystal structures. Machine learning without data can also be performed by using differential equations as constraints [5]. For high output dimensions and low input data volumes, such as phonon dispersion relations, we introduce additional approaches like virtual nodes in a graph neural network [6], showing improved efficiency compared to machine-learning potential without losing accuracy. To address unreliable ground truth, we use machine learning to distinguish Majorana zero modes in scanning tunneling spectroscopy for topological quantum computation [7]. For cases like quantum spin liquids, where experimental signatures are unclear and computational costs are high, we generate materials with potential geometrical frustration. Our latest work, SCIGEN, produces eight million materials belonging to Archimedean lattices, with over 50% passing DFT stability checks after pre-screening [8]. Despite progress, applying machine learning to quantum materials is still in its infancy. We reflect on the out-of-distribution problem, aiming to generate genuine surprises and new features rather than merely recognizing patterns. Additionally, we must address accuracy limitations in many machine learning approaches, especially with complex quantum systems and phase diagram studies. The meetings are a gathering for all who struggle with substance use and/or other mental and behavioral health disorders. An All Recovery meeting is 'non-denominational' meaning all pathways of recovery are embraced here. A universal recovery topic is chosen and then the group discusses it. It is not affiliated with any "Anonymous" program although you are likely to hear comments associated with 12 step fellowships. Meetings are facilitated by a student member of the URC supported by a Recovery Coach and held in person and online for students from all of UConn's campuses.
