HookC Beats Creighton, 9-2

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (28-20, 13-3 BIG EAST) notched a series opening victory against Creighton (31-15, 4-11 BIG EAST), 9-2, on Friday evening at Elliot Ballpark. 

The Huskies hit four home runs on the night including a two-run shot from Korey Morton to make it 2-0 Huskies. 

Garrett Coe made his 21st career start on Friday and for the final time at Elliot Ballpark notched his 16th career victory. The lefthander tossed 6.1 innings with just two runs allowed (one earned) and seven strikeouts.

After Creighton tied in with a pair of runs in the third, UConn responded with a pair of home runs in the fifth. Jake Studley smashed a solo shot into the visitor's bullpen in left to give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage.

After a Matt Garbowski single, freshman Tyler Minick smoked a two-run homer in a similar spot to Studley's home run to push the lead to 5-2. 

Maddix Dalena pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fixth with a two-out RBI double. 

In the seventh inning the Bluejays loaded the bases with one out against Coe. UConn called on RHP Jack Sullivan out of the pen and with the tying run at the plate, Sullivan struck out back-to-back batters to get out of trouble.

Sullivan finished off the game with 2.2 innings of work and secured his first career save.

Dalena capped the scoring with a three-run home run to center in the seventh, his 10th of the year, to make it 9-2. 

UConn and Creighton resume the series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. for HookC Day at Elliot Ballpark.

Game Notes

  • Korey Morton hit his 25th career home run and stole his 54th career stolen base on Friday night. 
  • Garrett Coe is earned his 16th career win to move into a tie for 15th all-time for victories at UConn. 
  • Tyler Minick has recorded an extra base hit in three-straight starts and six of his last seven games.
  • The eight extra base hits for the Huskies is a new season-high.
