- 11:00 AM1hBanal NationalismThe debate over banal or everyday nationalism took off after the publication of Michael Billig's book Banal Nationalism in 1995. National identity is routinely expressed through everyday practices such as displaying the flag or other national symbols, cooking certain foods, wearing certain clothes, supporting national sports teams, etc. Commercial businesses often use national symbols to sell their products. How do these 'banal' expressions of national identity relate to nationalist political goals? To what extent is everyday nationalism orchestrated from above, or does it emerge spontaneously from below? When does banal nationalism support civic, inclusionary identity narratives as opposed to exclusionary, ethnic accounts? The banal nationalism approach usefully focuses our attention on the ethnography of the present as opposed to debates over the historical origins of nations. PRESENTER: Peter Rutland. - 2:00 PM1hMA Thesis Defense of Jingzhi GuoPathways to College Majors: Decomposing the Effects ofFamily Background through High School STEM Experiences Jingzhi Guo Department of Sociology University of Connecticut MA Thesis Defense October, 2nd, 2024 2:00 PM Committee Members Dr. Simon Cheng (Chair) Dr. Mary Fischer Dr. Jeremy Pais Abstract This paper investigates how family background shapes college major choices through high school experiences in STEM. Using data from the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS: 2009-18) to measure college majors and high school experiences in STEM course-taking and extracurricular activities, I use OLS regression, multinomial logit regression, and KHB decomposition to examine the effects of family background on college major choices. First, I found that parents' education and occupation fields explain differences in major choices better than common measures of family socioeconomic backgrounds, such as family income and parental education. Family income and parent's education level are important factors, in whether the student can enter a four-year college or not. However, there is no significant and consistent influence on students' major choices. In contrast, having parents with STEM backgrounds could significantly encourage students into STEM majors. Second, I find that using the traditional binary oppositional classification of STEM or non-STEM majors is insufficient to support a more nuanced analysis. There are differences in financial returns even among STEM majors, which are traditionally expected to be more financially rewarding. Students with parents in STEM fields prefer vocational STEM majors rather than Art & Science STEM majors. Third, I found a specific pathway through which parental STEM background influences major choice, namely using high school STEM experiences. Students with a parental STEM background are more likely to take additional STEM courses and participate in extracurricular STEM activities, which in turn increases their likelihood of majoring in vocational STEM fields.

- 5:30 PM1hMath Club: Quantum mechanics as a deformation of classical mechanics, by Dion Mann (UConn)A new mathematical description of a physical theory should be consistent with an earlier description of the theory in settings where the earlier one has been well-tested by experiments. This often means that the earlier mathematical description is a limiting case of the new one at certain parameter values or that the new description is a "deformation" of the old one. As a prototypical example, the ancient idea of a flat Earth is a limiting case of the more accurate sphere model when we look at a sphere up close. We also can interpret quantum mechanics as a deformation of classical mechanics via a mathematically technique called "deformation quantization." Here, quantum mechanics involves Planck's constant \(\hbar\) and its limiting behavior as \(\hbar \to 0\) leads us back to classical mechanics. This talk will give an introduction to what deformation quantization is all about. The talk will assume the audience has seen partial derivatives and eigenvectors.Note: Free refreshments. The talk starts at 5:40.
