- 10:00 AM1hStatistical Colloquium: A systematic design construction and analysis for cost-efficient order-of-addition experiment, Frederick Kin Hing Phoa, Institute of Statistical Science, TaiwanA systematic design construction and analysis for cost-efficient order-of-addition experiment Presented byFrederick Kin Hing Phoa, Research Fellow, Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica, Taipei, TaiwanJoint work with Jing-Wen Huang, Institute of Statistics, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, TaiwanMeeting Link: Link (https://uconn-cmr.webex.com/uconn-cmr/j.php?MTID=m8e43b484bd41bc0afb9fb4e4565076a3)Date: Friday, April 11, 2025, 10:00 AM, AUST 340Coffee will be served at 9:30 in the Noether Lounge (AUST 326)Abstract: In this work, we propose a systematic design construction method for cost-efficient order-of-addition (OofA) experiments, and its corresponding statistical models for analyzing experimental results. In specific, our designs take the effects of two successive treatments into consideration. Each pair of level settings from two different factors in our design matrix appears exactly once to achieve cost-efficiency. Compared to designs in recent studies of OofA experiments, our design is capable of conducting experiments of one or more factors, so practitioners can insert a placebo, or choose different doses as level settings when our design is used as their experimental plans. We show an experimental analysis based on our design results in better performance than those based on the minimal-point design and Bayesian D-optimal design with the pairwise-order modeling in terms of identifying the optimal order.Bio: Frederick Kin Hing Phoa is a research fellow of Institute of Statistical Science at Academia Sinica (ISSAS) in Taiwan. He has been with ISSAS since 2009, after his graduation from University of California at Los Angeles in USA. He is also appointed as adjunct professors in National Taiwan University, National Central University and National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. His research areas of interest include design and analysis of experiments; methods of variable selection; network data analysis; nature-inspired metaheuristics optimization; scientometrics; hierarchical time series analysis; data visualization; and environmental statistics; and many others. Dr. Phoa has published scientific articles in statistical research journals including The Annals of Statistics, Statistica Sinica, Technometrics, and in interdisciplinary and computing research journals including Scientific Reports, Physical Review B, Physica A, Network Science, Chemometrics, Swarm and Evolutionary Optimization. Dr. Phoa is the recipient of Career Development Award (Academia Sinica) (2014), Ta-You Wu Award (MOST Young Researcher Award) (2015), Best Paper Award at World Congress of Engineering (2015), Outstanding Research Award (MOST) (2018), Outstanding Scholar Award (Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship) (2020), and Investigator Award (Academia Sinica) (2022). This new system of PDEs is an extension of the Monge-Ampere equation, naturally arising from the prescribed curvature problem, and closely related to the classical problem of isometric immersions, as well as appearing in the Gamma-limit of the dimensionally reduced non-Euclidean elastic energies.

- 11:00 AM1hMarine Sciences Seminar: Thomas MarchittoThomas MarchittoUniversity of ColoradoTaking the temperature of the deep sea during the geologic past There is a long history of using geochemical 'proxies' in biogenic marine carbonates to quantitatively reconstruct past ocean temperatures. However, precise measures of deep sea temperature, which are useful for probing such phenomena as the thermohaline circulation, ocean carbon sequestration, and global ice volume, have been elusive. This is because most proxies respond to additional variables beyond temperature, including both environmental and biological ('vital') factors. I will share recent advances in understanding why a relatively new approach, based on the ratio between magnesium and lithium in biogenic carbonates, is apparently immune to vital effects, thereby providing a precise paleothermometer for the deep ocean.Host: Dave LundTime & Date: 11:00 am, Friday, April 11, 2025Place: Lowell Weicker Building, Seminar Room 103 (or Webex)Request Seminar InformationCancellation & Additional Seminar Details (https://marinesciences.uconn.edu/seminar/seminar1253/)If you are an individual with a disability and need accommodations, please contact 860-405-9152 (tel:+18604059152) or email marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu (mailto:marinesciencesseminars@uconn.edu). - 11:15 AM50mAlgebra Seminar - Exploration of Grothendieck-Teichmueller (GT) shadows - Vasily Dolgushev (Temple Univ.)Vasily Dolgushev (Temple University) will speak on Exploration of Grothendieck-Teichmueller (GT) shadowsAbstract: In 1990, V. Drinfeld introduced the Grothendieck-Teichmueller group \({m GT}\). This mysterious group receives a homomorphism from the absolute Galois group \(G_{\mathbb Q}\) of rational numbers, and this homomorphism is injective due to Belyi's theorem. Grothendieck-Teichmueller (GT) shadows may be thought of as approximations of elements of the group \({m GT}\). They are morphisms of a groupoid whose objects are certain finite index normal subgroups of the Artin braid group. Exploration of the groupoid of GT-shadows is motivated by very hard open problems that include Y. Ihara's question about the surjectivity of the homomorphism from \(G_{\mathbb Q}\) to \({m GT}\). In my talk, I will introduce the groupoid of GT-shadows and describe its relation to the group \({m GT}\). I will also present promising results and formulate selected open problems. My talk is loosely based on papers written jointly with I. Bortnovskyi, J.J. Guynee, B. Holikov and V. Pashkovskyi.

- 12:00 PM4hHarmony of Nature II: WavesHarmony of Nature II: Waves is an international and experimental collaboration that connects audiences with nature by transforming environmental data into classical music. The exhibition is a multimedia experience of musical compositions, video, and documentary objects. Musical compositions of wavelike gestures were derived from tide gauge observations of sea level rise along the coast of the Long Island Sound, buoy measurements of the propagation of a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean, and mathematical expressions. The specific datasets chosen are direct observations, rather than model projections, and the music expresses the nuances of the flow of nature. Harmony of Nature II: Waves emphasizes the portrayal of physical phenomenon as a generative force, to create music that is both artistically and scientifically communicative. The works were created by the project's trio of members, acclaimed South Korean pianist Sophy Chung, oceanographer Molly M. James, and composer, computer scientist Max Lu.Harmony of Nature II: Waves received support from Connecticut Sea Grant Arts Support Awards Program.
- 12:00 PM4hSeaward: Coastal Paintings by Jacqueline Jones and Mary TempleJacqueline Jones, influenced by the American Impressionists of the Old Lyme Art Colony, presents plein air and studio paintings of dynamic beauty. Her lively brushwork captures the fleeting effects of sunlight, subtle atmospheres of color, and the power of the tides along New England coastlines. Mary Temple's daily Coastal Sunrise paintings represent her experience of one view off the coast of Maine. Each painting, through intensity of color and a muscular application of thick oil paint, creates a maximal experience for the viewer which is surprisingly inventive and deeply satisfying. The exhibition will be on view alongside the concurrent exhibition Harmony of Nature II: Waves Exhibition dates: April 2- May 4. Reception: April 2, 5:30-7:30 pm. Hours: Th-Sun. 12-4 pm

- 12:15 PM1hPSLA Seminar Series Pantoja-Benavides & SalehHost: Andrew Simmons & Joseph HowardLocation: YNG 132 When: Friday April 11th 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM Webex Link:s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars (http://s.uconn.edu/psla_seminars) Alvaro Pantoja-Benavides - Gray Water Footprint of Irrigation and Fertilization Practices in Production of Petunias in Greenhouses Join us as Alvaro Pantoja-Benavides, Ph.D. candidate and graduate research assistant currently pursuing a degree in Plant Science in Dr. Rosa Raudales's lab. Greenhouse irrigation typically relies on timed programs or visual assessments of plant water status, which could lead to overirrigation, resulting in excessive leaching and runoff. Agricultural runoff can contaminate surface and groundwater through the accumulation of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and phosphate-phosphorus (PO4-P). The gray water footprint (GWF) refers to the volume of freshwater required to dilute pollutants to achieve target water quality standards. GWF is an indicator that can be used to compare the environmental impact of agricultural practices, such as irrigation and fertilization. This talk will report the findings of research where we compared the GWF, plant growth NO3-N, and PO4-P concentration in the leachate of Petunia milliflora F1 (Picobella Pink) under a combination of three irrigation methods (overhead, drip, or subirrigation) with two controlled release fertilizers rates (CRF, Osmocote 15-9-12). AbdAlla Saleh - Quantifying fungal soilborne pathogen proliferation in response to nitrogen fertilization using digital droplet-based PCR AbdAlla is a second-year graduate research assistant in Dr. Everhart's lab at the University of Connecticut. This talk will highlight the current project's idea of whether there is a dose-dependent relationship between nitrogen application and the quantity of fungal pathogens by using a digital-droplet PCR. Nitrogen is a fundamental element for plant growth, and its availability in soil is a key indicator of fertility. Uneven nitrogen distribution can lead to nutrient imbalances, alter soil properties, and disrupt microbial diversity, creating conditions that, in some cases, have been shown to favor the proliferation of soilborne pathogens. The relationship between nitrogen fertilization and soilborne pathogen dynamics remains poorly understood, and while modern diagnostic technologies (e.g., sensor-based systems and qPCR) offer promising solutions, their limited specificity can complicate the differentiation between pathogens, non-pathogenic microbes, and environmental stressors.
- 12:20 PM50mSIGMA Seminar - Artin Gluing: The Art of Gluing - Ben Grant (UConn)Let's face it, disjoint unions are boring. Wouldn't it be great if there were an interesting way to glue two topological spaces together that isn't just sticking them side by side? This is precisely what the construction of Artin gluing offers us. Namely, if we have two topological spaces $$U$$ and $$K$$ (and just a teensy tiny bit more information), we can "glue" them together to form a new topological space with $$U$$ as an open subspace and $$K$$ as its closed complement. In this talk, we will derive this construction from first principles with the help of a number of funny-looking blob-shaped diagrams. We'll then discuss how this construction lifts to the level of abelian and triangulated categories, where we're allowed to say the French word "recollement" (literally "the act of reattaching") instead. Time permitting, we'll finally look at a specific family of recollements living out in the representation-theoretic wild.

- 2:30 PM1hUConn Physics ColloquiumDr. Rebecca Larson, Rochester Institute of TechnologyAdvancements in Exploring the Early Universe: Unlocking the Mysteries of Galaxies During the Reionization Era The history of galaxies in the early Universe remains substantially unknown. The mystery surrounding these galaxies is primarily a result of the epoch in which they existed. During the epoch of reionization (z>6), the Universe experienced its last major phase change, where the neutral gas permeating the intergalactic medium [IGM] became ionized. Light emitted from early galaxies was often blocked by this neutral gas (or "cosmic fog"), preventing restframe ultraviolet [UV] spectroscopic studies of this epoch except for faint traces of light detectable in the near-infrared [NIR] from the brightest sources. Before 2022, the high-redshift field was restricted due to limited ground- and space-based instrumentation probing NIR wavelengths and beyond. Much of what we learned spectroscopically about these galaxies during this time came from a handful of bright UV metal emission lines or far-infrared [FIR] emission (generally with only 1-2 lines detected in individual galaxies). These data only came after fighting for hours using the most massive telescopes on the ground and in space. Since the advent of JWST, the high-redshift field has exploded with new science probing wavelengths and redshifts previously inaccessible. Using the advanced spectroscopic NIR capabilities of the JWST, we have found increasingly distant galaxies and characterized these sources within the heart of the epoch of reionization [EoR] for the first time. In this talk, I will discuss the state of the high-redshift field before and after the launch of JWST – highlighting our work from the Cosmic Evolution and Early Release Science [CEERS] survey, among other key early release science [ERS] & Cycle 1-3 programs. These new data have led to the discovery of an unexpected abundance of bright galaxies and active galactic nuclei [AGN] in the EoR, providing insights into the roles that the nature of these early galaxies and the nurturing from their environments played in the reionization of the Universe.

- 4:00 PM1hLinguistics Colloquium: Lyn TieuTitle and abstract of the talk: Linguistic inferences beyond words Research in contemporary semantics has uncovered a typology of linguistic inferences, characterized by their conversational status and their behavior in complex sentences. This typology of linguistic inferences is usually thought to be specific to language and in part lexically encoded in the meanings of words. In this talk, I will present experimental evidence of implicatures, presuppositions, homogeneity inferences, and supplements, triggered variously by gestures, visual animations, sound effects, and emoji. The finding that we can replicate what are normally thought to be language-specific inferences – using non-words – raises new questions and challenges regarding the fundamental nature of linguistic inferences and how we might acquire them.

- 8:00 PM3hWatchhouseOver a year after Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz of Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) reintroduced themselves on their 2021 self-titled LP, the pair shared a special surprise release: Watchhouse (Duo), a self-produced recording of Marlin and Frantz performing the most elemental possible arrangements of all nine songs from Watchhouse. It's a project that captures the fundamental power of Watchhouse: Two singers and musicians with profound chemistry, performing earnest yet masterfully crafted songs that encompass the unknowable mysteries, existential heartbreak, and communal joys of modern life. A grassroots success story that's been driven by Marlin's poignant songwriting, they've sold out iconic venues (Red Rocks, Ryman Auditorium) and attract hundreds of millions of streams while producing exploratory music that "redefines roots music for a younger generation" (Washington Post).
