HookC Secures First Win, 5-3, in Extras

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UConn baseball team (1-5) notched its first win of the year with a 5-3 comeback win in extra innings at FAU on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Huskies trailed 3-1 entering the eighth inning but a pinch-hit single by Beau Root brought the tying run to the plate. After an Owls pitching change to bring in closer MJ Bollinger, Tyler Minick greeted him with a game-tying two run homer way out of the stadium to left field.

It was the third-straight day that Minick had homered and capped a 10-RBI weekend for the sophomore.

UConn closer Brady Afthim came out of the UConn bullpen and was lock down for the Huskies. The RHP struck out four in three shutout frames that featured just one base runner, via a walk.

The Huskies gave Afthim the lead in the 10th on a two-run, no-doubt home run from Ryan Daniels. The second homer of the year for the Meriden, Conn. native was his fourth hit of the day, setting a new career high for the second baseman.

Tommy Ellisen got the starting nod for the Huskies and posted four shutout innings to open the ballgame. In the fifth, Ellisen ran into trouble with back-to-back singles and then a walk to load the bases.

LHP Gabe Van Emon came out of the pen and limited the Owls to a sacrifice fly and RHP Greg Shaw III coaxed an inning-ending double play ball to limit the damage to one.

UConn tied the game up the top of the seventh but quickly relinquished the lead on a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Southern California to face off against three Power Four Conference opponents, USC, UCLA and Vanderbilt. The Huskies and Trojans square off Friday, February 28 at 9:30 p.m. ET.
