NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The UConn men's golf team took third place overall at the weather shortened Surf Club Invitational on Tuesday at The Surf Golf and Beach Club course.
The tournament was slated for 54-holes over two days but heavy rains on Monday delayed the start of play and shortened the event to just two rounds. The Huskies finished fourth overall shooting 280 on Monday's opening round and 292 on Tuesday to finish +4 for the tournament, behind Longwood (-1) at the top of the leaderboard and host App State (+2) in second place.
The Huskies had three players finish in the top-20 on the leaderboard led by senior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, NJ) who tied for sixth overall. Dennehy finished one-under for the tournament, shooting 70 on Monday and coming back with a 71 on Tuesday.
Dennehy posts his third top-10 finish of the season, posting his eighth and ninth rounds at par or better. He finished with 10 total birdies, five on each day.
Junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, CT) and sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, FL) each tied for 13th overall in the field, both at +1. Goode had UConn's lowest round of the tournament, firing a two-under 69 on Monday, his team-leading 10th round at par or lower this season. Goode finished with a 74 on Tuesday. It was Goode's team-best fourth top-20 on the year.
Heard posted a one-under 70 during Monday's first round, his eight round at par or better, and came back on Tuesday to shoot a 73. It was his second top-20 finish of the season.
Rounding out the UConn contingent was sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, CT) who tied for 21st (71-74=145) and freshman Matt Costello (Taunton, MA) who was tied for 81st (76-78=154). Senior Eric Boulger (Walpole, MA), playing as an individual, tied for 70th place (75-77=152).
The Huskies jump right back into action this weekend taking part in the ECU Intercollegiate at the Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, NC on March 17-18.
